David Hill Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home & Cemetery on May 19, 2025.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Maurice Hill, 84, on May 11, 2025. David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, whose life was defined by service, dedication, and love for his family and country.
Born on August 14, 1940, David grew up with a strong sense of duty and discipline, which led him to a distinguished 30-year career in the United States Navy. Rising to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer, he retired in 1988 after serving his country with honor and distinction. During his naval career, David participated in the Vietnam conflict, the Cold War, and numerous cruises in support of American naval sea power. His leadership, integrity, and commitment to his fellow sailors and Marines left a lasting impact on all who served alongside him.
In retirement, David was a friend in his extended community, always ready to lend a hand to those who asked and share his experiences. His humor and generosity touched all who knew him, David especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, watching them grow and flourish, and celebrating their achievements.
David was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years, Nancy Hill; his brothers, Edwin and Roger; and his sisters, Lola and Margaret. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Rhonda Hill; his four children, Penni, Tammi, Mike, and Robin; his seven grandchildren, Kathleen, Arlene, Miranda, Tyler, Emma, Hayden, and Basil; and his five great-grandchildren, Darren, Owen, Hope, Greyson, and Soren.
David will be remembered for his remarkable storytelling, his humorous approach to life, his love of the water, and his loyalty to his wife and family. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, dancing, goofing around, and walking his route in Hawai'i, where he found peace, joy, community and beauty on the Big Island. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family, creating memories that will live on in their hearts forever.
A public visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Jacksonville Memory Gardens Chapel. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 22, 2025, at Jacksonville National Cemetery. All those who plan to attend, please park in procession lane 2.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David's memory to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, an organization dedicated to supporting sailors, Marines, and their families in times of need.
Fair winds and following seas, Master Chief Hill. Your legacy of service, laughter, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew you.
