David Paul Koernig

David Koernig of Minneapolis born October 18th, 1944 passed away on February 16, 2026. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Genelle; their children, Stephanie (Scott), Laura(Michael), Scott (Erin), and Kevin; and grandchildren Rosilynn, Madeline, Lindsey, Pharell, Maurice, Annika, and Amara.

He grew up in southeast Minneapolis and, after spending two years at a Paulist seminary in Baltimore, chose to follow a different path. He returned to Minneapolis and completed high school at DeLaSalle.

He attended the University of Minnesota for four years and, during the Vietnam War, applied for conscientious objector status. As part of his service, he worked as an orderly at St. Mary's Hospital, where he met his future wife, Genelle.

During his time at St. Mary's, he discovered a love for nursing and enrolled in the first nursing class at Metropolitan Community College, graduating in 1972. He went on to dedicate his career to surgical nursing, first at Eitel Hospital and later at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, where he remained until his retirement.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 28th, at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, 1500 Franklin Ave SE, Minneapolis, with visitation one hour prior.
