David Laub passed away peacefully at his Bridgewater home on April 3, 2025, at the age of 103.
David was born in Brooklyn New York in 1921 as one of six sons of Harry and Pauline Laub. He attended Townsend Harris school where he played basketball and then went on to City College of New York where he played basketball with Red Holtzman who became the Hall of Fame New York Knicks basketball coach. He graduated with a degree in civil engineering in 1942 and then served in the Army Core of Engineers in the Pacific Theatre in World War II as a Combat Engineer. He was on his way by ship to Okinawa when the Japanese surrendered, and he returned to Fort Belvoir in Washington DC. He entered officers training school and played as captain of the basketball team. He was then recruited by Red Auerbach, the future Boston Celtics coach, to play for the Washington Capitals in the BAA league. After he was discharged from the Army, David was recruited to play for the Troy Celtics in the American Basketball League.
David was a professional civil engineer who owned and operated the David Laub construction company for over 30 years, retiring in his 90s. In his spare time, he enjoyed horseback riding, going to the theater in Princeton, reading American history, playing tennis, photography, and spending time with his family. David loved dogs, especially golden retrievers and staying healthy. He was a very logical, optimistic husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be sadly missed by all.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Arlene. Surviving is his daughter Patricia Cook and her husband, Chris, Diane Schneider and her husband Dr. Stephen, Glenn Laub, MD and his wife Karen, six grandchildren. Lara, Bradford, Courtney, Corey, Taylor and David. and 4 great grandchildren, Tara, Charlotte, Lily and Alex.
