David Macfarlane Obituary

David Langton Macfarlane

1959-2024

Park City, UT-With profoundly heavy hearts, we share the passing of Dave Macfarlane, beloved husband, father, friend, and adventurer. Dave departed from this world on March 12, 2024 in the Lemhi Mountains, leaving a deep and meaningful legacy of love, kindness, and friendship.

Born on April 17, 1959, to James and Carol Macfarlane, Dave spent his childhood in Salt Lake City, attending Highland High School and graduating from the University of Utah in 1983. An accomplished athlete with an insatiable zest for adventure, Dave lived each day fully, embracing family, friends, work, and community. His genuine, humble and thoughtful character along with his positive, curious spirit endeared him to all fortunate to know him.

Dave possessed an exceptional reverence for the land and nature, embodying the ethos of stewardship instilled by his family's rich history of ranching and exploration in the West, particularly in the wilderness of the Wasatch and Uinta mountains. A passionate, skilled outdoorsman, Dave found his greatest inspiration, joy and peace in the mountains, whether skiing pristine powder, navigating rugged terrain with his faithful mules, or simply gazing towards vast peaks and valleys. He reveled in studying the history, terrain, and geography of a place, his knowledge enhanced by his collection of topographic maps. Dave's adventurous spirit was also contagious, and he delighted in sharing his passion for the natural environment with loved ones.

In addition to loving the outdoors, Dave was a dedicated mentor and advocate for young adults, friends, and employees, fostering a close-knit, supportive culture and atmosphere within his printing business, IC Group, where he served as CEO and President since 1992. His leadership was intentional, courageous, and impactful, focused on continuous improvement and innovation with the business and his partners and the health and wellness of people - his belief in human connection. Dave generously, respectfully, and discreetly supported individuals seeking guidance in education, career development, and financial assistance or in need of any type of help along the way. He had a deeply meaningful and personal value of service to others across his various communities.

Above all, Dave cherished being a devoted husband and father, providing a complete and unwavering love, presence, and encouragement to his wife Tami and children Grace and William. His kindness, wisdom, and empathy were unwavering, and his absence leaves a void in the lives of his loved ones, friends, and community. Although Dave no longer walks among us, his spirit lives on in the cherished memories we hold dear and the mountain ranges he explored. Rest peacefully, dear Dave, knowing we carry you in our hearts and with us on our adventures forever.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Mac Scholarship, honoring Dave and Tami's lifelong dedication to empowering first-generation individuals. A service will be held on Thursday March 28th at 3:30pm at This is the Place Heritage Park (2601 Sunnyside Ave S, Salt Lake City, UT 84108)

I had the honor of working for Dave and the IC Group. His name badge said 'Big Mac Daddy', but we called him 'Big Daddy'. He was a great owner that was always doing something adventurous. I'm sad to hear of his passing because I know that there were many more adventures waiting for him!

Dave and Tami were so very kind and supportive (including being the muscle for an adapted-ski day) several years ago when we hit a rough spot. . . we were lucky to be some of the many blessed by his generous spirit.
