David J. Mattson

David John Mattson, life-long resident of Rochester, MN was born April 16, 1938 and died on January 25, 2026 at the age of 87 following a brief illness.

David "Matty" graduated from Rochester High School in 1956. Always hard-working and on the go, he had a life-long career at Scharf Auto Supply. David was a faithful member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rochester. Serving his country for over a decade in the Army Reserve Military Police, David finished at the rank of E-7 Sergeant First Class. He took great pride participating in a recent honor flight to Washington, DC. David served his community for many years as a Youth Hockey Coach and a member of Sertoma 700 Club both of which he was a past president. An avid outdoorsman, David could often be found in his retirement years chopping wood, on the golf course, snowmobiling, or seasonal trips "up north" deer hunting and fishing.

David is survived by his wife of 66 years, Virginia; 3 children-Gayle (Jeff) of Cincinnati OH, Todd of Rochester, and Rick (Jenny) of Rochester; 7 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

The Memorial Service for David will be held on Friday, January 30, 2026 at 11:00AM at Redeemer Lutheran Church (869 7th Avenue SE, Rochester, MN). Visitation will begin at 9:30AM prior to the funeral, at Redeemer Lutheran Church. A luncheon will follow. Burial will be at a later date at Grandview Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Rochester.

In lieu of flowers, if you would like to donate in David's memory, please consider Redeemer Lutheran Church, The Salvation Army, Women's Shelter and Support Center, or a charity meaningful to you.

I remember fondly Jenny, Dave and the kids living next to Lowe´s when I moved to Rochester as a 1st year teacher. You seemed at times as part of the family. I remember Dave as a fun loving caring guy. RIP Dave
