David Fredrick Mertens, age 86, of Staples and Wadena, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2025. He was born on July 19, 1939, to Lawrence and Violet Mertens.
David shared 53 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Marion. Together, they raised five children and built a life filled with love, laughter, and devotion.
For over 25 years, David served as an instructor of Machine Trades at Brainerd Staples Technical College, where he dedicated himself to teaching and guiding students in their craft. His passion for learning and sharing his knowledge left a lasting legacy with all who had the privilege of knowing him.
David’s interests were many and reflected his love for life. He enjoyed biking, RV-ing, woodworking, square dancing, coin collecting, making his own greeting cards, photography, and singing in his church choir. He brought joy and creativity to everything he did, and his warm presence enriched the lives of his family and community.
He is survived by his children: Michael (Teri) Mertens, David Mertens, Steven (Char) Mertens, Nancy (Dan) Meier, and Beverly (Darwin) Quiring; 15 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Lawrence Mertens and Donald (LaDell) Mertens, as well as his dear friend Mary Marquardt.
David was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Mertens; parents, Lawrence and Violet Mertens; his brother, Charles Mertens; and great grandchildren Hunter, and Gerard.
David will be remembered for his kindness, his love of family, and his unwavering faith. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:30am on September 12, 2025, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Staples, with a visitation one hour prior.
Memorial money will be donated to North Country Food Bank.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Family Funeral Chapel, Staples.
