David Mortensen Obituary

David Michael Mortensen was born in Omaha on November 12, 1990 to Richard and Sue (Grove) Mortensen, the second of the three children with which they were blessed. He went home to the Lord on August 23, 2025, from one of his favorite places, the lake, surrounded by his family including all his beloved nieces and nephews.

David attended the Elliott Elementary in the Griswold Community School District and graduated from Griswold High School in 2009. As well as being a good student, he was a valuable contributor to the football, basketball, baseball, track and golf teams. Probably the greatest gift he shared was music. He played the trombone in marching, concert and jazz bands, earning a chair in the Southwest Iowa Honor Band every year of his middle and high school career and trips to bowl games with the Southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band.

After high school, David attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha where he served as a Residence Hall Advisor and was active in campus ministry before graduating with a degree in Architectural Engineering.

David took a job with an engineering firm in Des Moines and soon found that a desk engineering job was not exactly where God wanted him to be. After a couple other jobs, he took one of his strengths and passions to work with his hands to a home remodeling company, soon joined by his brother Brad. They decided after a short business operation to go their separate ways and in the last couple years, David had found a satisfying job blending those talents as a project manager for a rebuilding company.

David was a lifelong Iowa State Cyclone fan and Denver Bronco fan, starting a quest in the last few years to see a game in every NFL stadium.

Not only following Jesus but being an active part of a church body was always important to David. He was involved in small groups, used his musical talents, now directed to guitar in worship teams and helped coach kids in church basketball leagues. His next highest priority in life was spending time with his family.

David is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Ronald Mortensen and maternal grandparents Ruth and Roger Grove. He is survived by his paternal grandmother Avis Mortensen, parents Richard and Sue (Grove) Mortensen, brother Bradley (Lori) Mortensen and their children Beckham, Jackson and Harper, sister Jennifer (Brennan) Nassiff and their children Fletcher, Everly, Selah and Paisley, as well as 10 aunts and uncles, 14 cousins and spouses and their 27 children, as well as many friends.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at 10:30 AM, at the Griswold Central Church of Christ. Visitation with the family will be held on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, from 6:00 PM until 8:30 PM, at the Griswold Central Church of Christ. Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is assisting the family.

David was a huge asset to our remodeling team and always did the right thing. The homeowners who's houses he worked in always had great things to say about their experiences with him during the remodel. You could always tell he was a great person by how he carried himself. He was always honest and took care of his customers. His presence in the showroom/office is going to be missed as we appreciated his sense of humor and quick witted jokes. Our deepest condolences go out to all the family members and friends of David. He is going to be truly missed!

David and I studied architectural engineering and played in the marching band together at UNO. I´m saddened to hear about his passing. My condolences to his family and so many other good friends.
