David Moyar Obituary

David W. Moyar
David W. Moyar
David William Moyar, beloved son, brother and uncle, passed away on December 2, 2024 at the Cleveland Clinic after a long and valiant battle with chondro sarcoma cancer. David was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 29,1967 to Bert and Marjorie Moyar. He graduated from Hawken School and went on to Yale University, where he majored in English and Philosophy. After graduating from Yale Law School in 1994, David clerked for Judge John G. Koeltl of the Southern District of New York. He decided not to practice law, instead joining his father in the hotel business. They built and managed hotels together for many years. They were named developer of the year by Hilton Garden Inns in 2002, and in 2008 were named one of the country's top Third-Party Management Companies. He was described by many employees of their hotels as a "truly great mentor."
Early on David developed a love of the outdoors on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout. Throughout his life he was deeply involved in environmental causes. He was active in the Environmental Entrepreneurs organization and a supporter of the National Resources Defense Council. After moving back to Cleveland, he became an avid fan of the Cavaliers. He was an innovative and creative cook, especially in his use of spices. Photography was his lifelong passion. He even constructed his own darkroom in the days of film cameras.
David was predeceased by an infant sister, Catherine, and is survived by his former wife and companion to the end, Monica Burton, and by his parents, Bert and Marjorie; brothers, Mark (wife Kelli) and Dean (wife Sharlyn); nieces and nephews, Greta, Trent, Luke, Lois and Dylan; aunt and uncle, Jeanne and the late Dean Papas.
Funeral services will be held at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 3352 Mayfield Road, Cleveland Hts., OH on Monday, December 9 at 12:30. A traditional Makaria luncheon will be offered at the Cathedral following the burial at Lake View Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the Cathedral on Monday, December 9 from 11:00 am – 12:30. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in memory of David to Cleveland Clinic to support Sarcoma research. Gifts can be sent to Cleveland Clinic Foundation, P.O. Box 931517, Cleveland, OH 44193-1655 or made online at https://my.clevelandclinic.org/giving. Please include David's name and "Sarcoma Research" with your contribution.
