David Nemmers Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield on Jan. 24, 2026.
David Joseph Nemmers, 91, of Winfield, KS, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2026 at his home, attended by family.

Visitation will be at Holy Name Catholic Church on January 30 at 5 PM, followed by a rosary at 6 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on January 31 at 10 AM with burial and military honors to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. The Reverend Clay Kimbro will officiate.

David was born on March 1, 1934 in Dubuque, IA, to Julian G. Nemmers Sr. and Ann (Reger) Nemmers. While growing up he enjoyed fishing in the Mississippi River and attending Major League baseball games with his father. After graduating from Loras Academy High School he attended Loras College for his pre-med studies. David completed medical school at the University of Iowa School of Medicine in 1959. On July 2, 1960 he married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Kieler, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Dickeyville, WI. David was drafted into the United States Army, and one month after they married, he and Patricia spent a year stationed in Korea, being the first of his two assignments there. He then returned to complete his internship at Kansas City General Hospital and in 1967 he completed his four-year residency in internal medicine at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI. David later completed a fellowship in pulmonary disease. His military career as an internist and flight surgeon took him and Patricia and their children all over the United States and continued up until his retirement from active duty at Ft. Riley, KS in 1978. He served in the Army Reserves until his full retirement as a colonel in 1989. For 21 years he continued his medical practice and served both Winfield and surrounding communities at the Snyder Clinic before retiring in 1999 at the age of 65. Thereafter, he maintained his medical license and volunteered his time at the Guadalupe Clinic in Wichita, KS.

David was a member of the American Medical Association, Military Officers of America, the Knights of Columbus and Holy Name Catholic Church. In his spare time he was an avid reader, especially the novels of Agatha Christie, and also many other murder mystery authors. He enjoyed gardening, photography, fishing, live musicals, and traveling to other US states and across Europe with family. David also loved watching MLB and NFL games, especially the Royals and Chiefs.

Survivors include his four children: Stephen Nemmers (Melissa) of Olathe, Deborah Eller of Wichita, Jeffrey Nemmers (Melody) of Wichita and Daniel Nemmers (Shannon) of Winfield; grandchildren Jessica Bowman (Michael), Matthew Eller, Brenda Nemmers, Michael Eller, Stephanie Moore (JD), Kaden Rouch (Gavin), Peter Nemmers, Sophia Nemmers, many great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his wife Patricia, his parents and all five of his siblings.

Memorial contributions for David may be made to Holy Name Catholic School; donations may be left in the care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home.
