David Pagel

September 30, 1952 – January 13th, 2026

David Pagel, of Holland, MI, passed away on January 13th, 2026, after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer. He met his illness the same way he lived his life: with quiet courage, a stoic resolve, and a dry sense of humor that never wavered. Dave worked hard his whole life, retiring from Amoco Production Company after a 22-year career. After retirement he worked as an independent well tech for various oil field companies in the Gaylord area. While eagerly waiting for Kay to retire, he went to work at Jay's Sporting Goods. He worked in the gun department which might have been his dream job.

Born in Goodrich, Michigan, to Harold and Phyllis (Mersino) Pagel, David grew up to be a man of few words but profound impact. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandpa whose love and pride in his family truly knew no boundaries.

Dave and Kay were married for 51 years, building a life rooted in love and unshakable commitment. Together, they found adventure on the open road. As a founding member of the North County Motorcycle Club in Gaylord, Dave spent years riding across the country with Kay, family and close friends, enjoying the freedom of two wheels and (the wind) finding the long way home. His garage was a place to gather for many as he was free with his tools and knowledge while "supervising" any maintenance or repair and many, MANY tire changes.

An avid supporter of the shooting sports, Dave served as a Board member of The Northland Sportsmen's Club in Gaylord. He was particularly proud of his work as an instructor for the "Women On Target" program, sharing his skills and patience with others. In his younger years, he was known to hunt a few deer, "drown a few flies" in the river, and master the art of the perfect campfire. He was happiest outdoors, especially when surrounded by his family.

Whether playing or listening, Dave loved music. He really enjoyed a live show and went to concerts whenever he had a chance. He played guitar and bass in many bands through the years and while he never did become a rockstar he always turned it up to 11 given the chance.

Dave was a lifelong learner. He loved reading and discovering new ideas and stories. Though he was soft-spoken, Dave's laugh was big enough to fill a room, and he always had a joke, whether you caught it or not. He was the "all-time" pitcher for every backyard baseball game. Whether he was on the mound in the yard or cheering from the sidelines at their various sporting events, he was his grandchildren's biggest-and steadiest-fan.

David is survived by his beloved wife, Kay; his children, Amanda (Scott) McKenzie and Chad (Angela) Pagel; and his five grandchildren who were his pride and joy: Avery and Gideon Pagel, and Gordon, Cora, and Miles McKenzie. He also leaves behind his mother, Phyllis Pagel; his sister, Karen (Jim) Riling; sisters-in-law Nona (Lewis) McNutt and Julia McNutt; and many special nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

David now joins his father, Harold; his brothers, Mark and Brian Pagel; his brothers-in-law, Elmer and William McNutt; and his sister-in-law, Jacqueline Sexton, on his new journey.

Dave, Dad, Grandpa-he was a steady anchor for his family and a loyal friend to many. He is deeply loved and will be missed beyond measure.

Dave, I will miss you so very much. Dave and Kay (my BFF) has always treated me like family and I am honored to be considered part of their amazing family. The love Dave and Kay shared is one for the ages. The song Look At US by Vince Gill could have been written for my dearest friends. Dave, my brother from another mother, thank you for being a wonderful part of my life.
