David S. Palenik, known affectionately as Davey to his friends and family, passed away on March 12, 2025, at the age of 68. Born on December 13, 1956, in Chicago, IL, he remained a lifelong resident and a cherished member of his community until his passing in the same city.Dave was the beloved son of his late parents, James I. "Iggy" Palenik and Loretta (nee Pogorzelski), and late stepmother Audrey (nee Welbourn). He was father to David Venegas and held close ties with his many siblings, despite the sorrow of having outlived several of them, including PFC 1st Class James Jr., Thea (Ken) Urban, Daniel (late Maureen), Susan (Gary) Welbourn, Carole (James) Green, and Lawrence (Joann). He is survived by his caring siblings Gerry (late Jane), Richard (Mary Lynn), Laura Boltz, Shawn (late Kathleen), and Katy (Joe, Jr.). As an uncle, he shared his generosity and love with his many nieces and nephews, including Rebecca (Green) Nelson, Bonnie (Green) Matthews, Daniel Palenik Jr., James Boltz Jr., Sarah Boltz, Kimberly (Welbourn) Silvestri, Steven Palenik, Lawrence Palenik, Shawn Palenik II, Erin Palenik, Richard Palenik II, and was a great-uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.
A proud graduate of Tilden High School's class of 1975, Davey furthered his education at Washburn Trade School where he earned his Machinist Certification. He applied his skills with precision and integrity throughout his career, first as a machinist at International Harvester (Case Corporation) and later at Tootsie Roll Industries. His work was not just a job; it was a testament to his dedication and craftsmanship.
Davey's interests were as varied as they were hands-on. He had a passion for physical fitness, and was an expert in automobile and motorcycle mechanics, as well as building construction. His skills were not kept to himself; he was always ready to help friends and neighbors in need. Davey was a man who put the needs of others before his own. Davey's favorite quote was from Shakespeare and was first shared with him by his brother Rick. Davey recited the quote from Othello to Rick just days before his death, "Who steals my purse steals trash; 'tis something, nothing; 'twas mine, 'tis his, and has been slave to thousands; But he that filches from me my good name, Robs me of that which not enriches him, And makes me poor indeed."
Davey's giving spirit was matched only by his zest for life. He approached every day with a can-do attitude and a heart full of kindness. Those who knew him were fortunate to experience his generosity, his laughter, and his unwavering support. He was a friend to many, and a man who will not be forgotten.
As we say goodbye to David S. Palenik, we celebrate a life full of love, hard work, and selfless giving. His memory will forever be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of those who were privileged to know him. Davey will be deeply missed; his spirit will continue to live on in everyone who knew him.
