David Popma Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 20, 2025.
David Paul Popma, 72, of Naples, Florida, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025. Born on August 13, 1953, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, David lived a life marked by humility, devotion, and quiet strength.

Dave was the fourth of ten children born to Frank and Doris Popma, Grand Rapids, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, Steve and Kurt Popma and his sister Nancy. From an early age, Dave displayed a deep sense of responsibility and care for those around him-qualities that would define his life.

He is survived by his faithful wife of 51 years, Debra Popma of Naples, FL. Their love story was one of unwavering commitment and joy; Dave lived to please Debbie and cherished their morning coffee times together as sacred moments. Together they built a beautiful life centered around faith and family.

Dave was a devoted father to Audrey Curran (Chris) and Brooke Lackey (Ryan), and a proud "Papa" to Brilynn (Matt), Elijah, Harper, Saylor, Samuel, and Noah. His legacy continues through his great-grandchild Brooks. Family was everything to Dave-he found his greatest happiness simply being with them. Whether it was a relaxing family boat day or an intense game of corn hole with his favorite IPA in hand, he made every moment meaningful.

A born-again Christian since 1976, Dave was a lifelong student of the Word. He loved studying scripture, enjoyed worship music and remained actively involved in many church ministries throughout his life. His faith was not just something he believed-it was something he lived daily with quiet conviction.

Dave had an insatiable curiosity and a love for learning that fueled many passions: boating, fishing, biking, RVing, running, gardening and fixing things around the house-even building his own home at just 28 years old. He approached every task with diligence and care. A true craftsman at heart, he always had a project underway and lent a helping hand whenever someone needed it.

Despite his many talents and accomplishments, Dave remained remarkably humble. He never had an unkind word about anyone and carried himself with grace and gentleness that left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Known for always dressing well-especially his signature cool shoes-he brought quiet style to everything he did.

Those who knew Dave will remember him as the perfect example of a father and friend-a man whose calming presence could ease any storm. His genuine smile lit up every room he entered. Everyone loved Dave because he made everyone feel loved.

May the memory of David Paul Popma bring comfort to all who were blessed to know him. His life was a testament to kindness, faithfulness, and love-a legacy that will endure for generations to come. A Celebration of Life will be held on September 27, 2025, at 02:00 PM at Summit Church - NAPLES CAMPUS 15220 Tamiami Trl N. . In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to:

AVOW - Frances Georgeson Hospice House, 1095B Whippoorwill Lane Naples, FL 34105, in memory of David Popma. (www.avowcares.org)
