David Reece Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 19, 2025.
David Mark Reece, 67, of Norwalk, Iowa, passed away on November 16, 2025. Born on July 7, 1958, in Des Moines, Iowa, David lived a life marked by resilience, humor, and deep devotion to his family.

He grew up in Des Moines, where he was nestled in the middle of a big, loving family with two older sisters and two younger brothers. His parents, Daniel Jr. and Marla, filled his childhood with adventure, taking the kids on countless camping and fishing trips that became some of David's most treasured memories- that shaped his lifelong love of nature, simple joys, and family.

David was a senior engineer at the downtown Des Moines Marriott hotel, he took great pride in his work, he cared about his company and truly wanted to deliver an exceptional experience to "his" hotel guests. He also cherished the relationships he built with his colleagues and considered them a second family. His retirement last May, after nearly 30 years of dedicated service, marked a bittersweet close to an accomplished career.

At the center of everything David did was his beloved wife, Jan. Together, they created a home filled with laughter, kindness, and love over their 38 years of marriage. He was a proud and devoted father to his daughter Jordan and her husband Adam Nihart, and to his son Ben and his wife Jordain Reece. But David's greatest joy came from being

"Peepaw" to his grandchildren, Emmett and Everly Reece, and Liam Nihart. Whether he was singing one of his silly made-up songs or delivering a perfectly timed dad joke, he had a magical way of making his grandkids light up. He was their favorite playmate, storyteller, and partner in mischief.

David's sense of humor was truly legendary, known for his over-the-top Snapchat selfies, FM broadcasting voice that had an uncanny ability to lift spirits, even during his most difficult days. His laugh was infectious, his smile unforgettable, and his presence comforting in a way that made every room feel lighter.

He found peace by the water with a fishing pole in hand, strength and discipline in tae kwon do - where he earned his 3rd-degree black belt, joy in the music he loved - especially behind a drum set, a special happiness in enjoying date nights movies at the IMAX theatre, and pure excitement in the fast-paced world of hockey. He could be found sharing his chair with his loyal dog Oliver-affectionately known as "Ollie-baba" who rarely left his side and brought him endless comfort. David was a true animal whisperer. These were the threads that connected him to others and helped create memories, his loved ones will hold close forever.

David faced life's toughest battles with remarkable courage. A true fighter, he endured multiple cancer diagnoses and other health challenges with strength that inspired everyone who walked beside him. Through every trial, he stayed positive and never lost his sense of humor.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, children (spouses), and grandchildren. His sisters Anne (Dan) Sweeney and Judy (Kerry) Abel, and his brothers Mike (Kim) Reece and Tom (Stacy) Reece, along with many extended family members, lifelong friends, and beloved animals Oliver and Max.

David joins his parents along with cherished dogs Beau and Riley, in eternal rest.

May David's memory bring comfort to all who knew him. His legacy lives on in every shared laugh around the dinner table, every family story lovingly retold, every fish reeled in from a quiet lake morning, every hockey game watched with enthusiasm, and most of all, in the hearts of those who were blessed to call him Peepaw.

A celebration of life will be held at the Madhouse on Hickman (original Buccaneer Arena) on January 17th, 2026 from 1:00pm-5:00pm. 7201 Hickman Rd, Urbandale, IA. We look forward to hearing and sharing stories about how David left an impact on your life.
