I went into end stage failure at 21 in 1991. I met Doctor Sutherland 8 months into dialysis. He was a walking encyclopedia. The kidney pancreatic transplant was a year and a half later. It transformed my life. Its 35 years later and I have a happy healthy life because of it. Im indebted for the years of hard work Davis Sutherland put in and will never forget what he did. My best to his family.

It is with extreme sadness I am writing this. I met Dr Southerland in 1991. I was 21 years old and had been on dialysis for 8 months. He was doing double transplants and my mother found him by accident. A year and a half later he installed a double transplants that changed my life for ever. He taught me so much in such a short amount of time my head was spinning. Anyway here I am 35 years later. Happy healthy and having a good life. I will never forget him and what he did for me.

Dr. Sutherland changed my life forever when he was the first to diagnose and believe that I had chronic pancreatitis at the age of three. Other doctors locally did not believe my diagnosis due to my age. He promised my parents he would keep in touch if ever my pain got bad enough that I might need a transplant, his groundbreaking transplant, & he kept that promise. I was 7 when he performed his auto islet cell transplant on me, & it gave me about 8 years of pain free childhood. His work inspired me to want to become a doctor & change lives for the better, the way he had for me. I also met so many other patients & families through him, also struggling with this rare disease.
Unfortunately he had stopped seeing patients by the time I had flare ups and required another surgery as a teenager, but I was desperate for him to be there, & being the kind, compassionate, sympathetic doctor he is, he weighed in on the case& spoke to me. Oddly enough my biggest regret is that he wasn´t the one to do my next surgery. He even allowed me to shadow his team doing research work during one summer & helped me secure an internship working with a local lab that was pushing boundaries even further in islet cell research.
I wish more doctors existed with the spirit, kindness, generosity, and empathy that Dr. Sutherland embodied. His work was one of a genius but his heart & character stood out even more. He´s been an inspiration to me all my life and will continue to be; his memory and legacy never forgotten as he lives on in his work, family, patients, and their families.

Thank you, Dr. Sutherland, for my pancreas transplant, which I received on April 14, 2001, and am still blessed to have.

Dr. Sutherland came into my life when no one had any answers for the constant pain I was living with from chronic pancreatitis from a mutated gene. He actually answered my emails and took my calls while we were trying to navigate getting my TP-AIT surgery. He was very kind with his words and generous with his time. I never felt like he did surgery because he enjoyed cutting, but because he knew he was going to make other's lives better. He left my bed post op, flew to Spain to teach a team there, and was back by my bedside 36 hours later. He was the ultimate "energizer bunny." My life was improved and lengthened because of his life's work. It was a privilege to not just know him, but to be under his meticulous care. May his family find so much joy and peace knowing the eternal impact he made on the future of medicine. I am a life that was changed because of his. Prayers for your hearts for the loss you all must feel.

I owe my life to this amazing man. He trained Dr Greg Beilman who performed my TP-IAT on 2/26/21. As you mourn, may you truly be comforted by how many lives have been blessed by your husband, father and grandfather. Julie Meek, Indianapolis

I am saddened to learn of Dr. Sutherland´s passing. He hired me in 1998 to lead his fund development. I had the privilege of working for him for him for 7 years, meeting many of his patients who supported his work at the University of Minnesota. So many of his patients were as devoted to him as he was to their care and well-being. He remembered every detail about each of his patients, attesting to his keen listening skills. Their care and successful transplantation was of the utmost importance to him. I also saw the great respect and deference of his colleagues and peers toward Dr. Sutherland when we traveled and visited donors. People often refer to "bedside manner of physicians," but with Dr. Sutherland, it was far beyond that. The successful treatment of his patients was very important to him. This photo is from 2010 with myself, Dr. Sutherland and one of his pancreas transplant patients, my dear friend, the late Faith Tootell and her husband, Robert. Rest in peace, Dr. Sutherland. Yours was a life well-lived that benefited so many and will continue to do so for years to come. -- Dawn M. Fish

I met Dr Sutherland January 2008at at age 59......he said I had suffered longer than any patient he had & was amazed I lived so long after over 52 Ercps. He was kind, concerned & ready to help ...if I had a concern he would call me back even if he was abroad which no dr I´ve ever know did. I had my surgery in September 2008 & the pain of my entire life was gone. I only wish I had met the extraordinary man sooner so I wouldn´t have suffered so long. He was so unique in his caring. I have written him every anniversary of my surgery to tell him how I was doing. I am now 77 and so saddened about by his passing...if anyone has ipancreatic issues feel free to contact me...Carolyn Bloom. singerbloom@ gmail.com
