David Anthony Rook

David Anthony Rook, known to his friends and family as "Dave," was born on December 5th, 1968 in Owosso, MI. He was the fourth of six children born to Ruth (Heckman) and Eugene Rook Jr. He passed away far too soon on August 28th, 2023 in Laingsburg, MI. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place and no formal services will be held.
He served in the U.S. Army after leaving Laingsburg High School in the 1980s, spent time as a long haul truck driver, worked in various areas of the building trades and more recently as a handyman. There wasn't much that he couldn't build or repair and he was as strong as an ox.
Dave had a sharp and inquiring mind, strong opinions, and was an avid reader of books by the hundreds. He enjoyed fishing, reading, hunting & just generally spending time outdoors. He was a big fan of children and animals and had a real soft spot for both. He was known by many as a gentle giant, kind-hearted and always willing to lend a hand to friends. Over the years Dave had struggled with addiction and health issues, but he kept his sense of humor all the same.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Eugene. He leaves behind a large family, including his grandfather Robert Stinson, his uncle James Michael "Mike" Stinson, and his five siblings. His brother Douglas and wife Kim, brother Thomas Rook, sister Suzanne and husband Jeffrey Bartz, sister Annette and husband Kerwin Charles, sister Janette Rook, extended family members and good friends who stuck by him through thick and thin will all miss his warm, generous spirit.
We will remember the patient, kind young man who patiently read Three Billy Goats Gruff to his sisters and taught them how to play chess and to fish, or the man who cuddled his cat so lovingly.
Dave's struggles remind us of the importance of compassion and understanding and we hope that his struggles will help others make the changes that they need to make.
Rather than sending flowers, the family asks that you plant a tree or spend some time on a lake or in the woods to remember Dave, as the outdoors always gave him peace.
