Manistique, MI

David P. Slining, longtime Manistique resident, passed away on December 30, 2025.

David was born on February 15, 1952. He graduated from Manistique High School in 1971 and later attended the trade school at Bay de Noc Community College.

David was employed at Manistique Papers Inc. for a short period of time before he joined the family business, Manistique Rentals Inc. During his long tenure at M.R.I. David honed his skills and became the firm's expert heavy equipment operator. After the family business was sold David continued to work at the quarry owned by Stone Mill Inc. David was also a proud member of the Manistique Volunteer Fire Department for 27 years.

David enjoyed numerous and varied interests during his life including habitat and environmental work at his camp on the West branch of the Manistique River, gardening, collecting antiques and historical artifacts especially items associated with his grandfather's Northwoods Broom Handle factory. In his younger years David also enjoyed scuba diving and his time with the Boy Scouts.

David was blessed to have many friends in town and he was well known for his sense of humor. In turn, those friends were blessed to know David because of his kindness in both his thoughts and deeds. David will be missed surely with some sadness but hopefully his memory will also bring a smile.

David was preceded in death by his parents George J. Slining Sr., Elizabeth R. Slining (Barnes), and his brother George J. Slining Jr. He is survived by his sisters Susan Slining of Vulcan, MI and Trish Forstner-Cayia (Bob Cayia) of Manistique, MI and his four nieces Kristy, Jenny, Ragen, Chloe and their families.

If you wish to honor David and let his legacy of love for animals live on you can direct a donation to Eva Burrell Animal Shelter, 6091W US Highway 2, Manistique, Michigan, 49854.

The family is planning a small burial service in the Summer of 2026 at the family plot in Fernwood Cemetery in Gladstone, MI.
