David Smithson Obituary
David was born in Oklahoma City and grew up in Dewey, Oklahoma. He loved history and sports and was captain of his high school baseball team. After graduating from Dewey High School, David attended, and later graduated from the University of Mississippi where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. David was a loyal friend maintaining lifelong connections with both his friends from Dewey as well as his friends from Ole Miss.
David chose a career in medicine, graduating from the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine and later obtaining board certification in both Internal Medicine and Sports Medicine.
Dr. Smithson also served as a Team Physician for the Auburn University Athletic Department from 1994 to 1996. He served as an Internal Representative to the Sports Medicine Examination Committee in 2002 and 2003 and helped to write the Sports Medicine National Board Exam. He would go on to work as an independent contractor for the military and later opened his own private practice in Birmingham, Alabama before continuing his career in Nashville, Tennessee and Dallas, Texas.
He is survived by his brother, John R. Smithson, Jr. (Jayne) of Longview, Texas, and sister Martha Brehm (Scott) of Garfield, Arkansas, by Bette Wieland, his current partner, of Phoenix, Arizona, by his nephews Sam Brehm, Joshua Brehm, and John R. Smithson, III (Kelly), his nieces Melissa Berning (Grant) and Rachel Brehm, and his former spouse, Ginger Sweet. He is preceded in death by his parents, John R. Smithson, Sr., Mona Jane Smithson, and niece Sarah Katherine Overstreet. David will be missed not only by his family but by his numerous friends throughout the years.
There will be a graveside service at Pawhuska City Cemetery on November 15, 2025 at 11 AM. Donations can be made to the Ole Miss Alumni Association.
