David Southard Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Zirbel Funeral Home on Jan. 17, 2026.
David L. Southard-known to most as Wild Man or Big Dave, and to his grandchildren as Grampies-was born on July 28, 1948, in Elmira, New York. A proud United States Navy veteran, David lived a life filled with music, quick wit, and a deep devotion to his family.

David passed peacefully on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2025, after a long battle with liver failure, holding hands with his love, Gerri (Geraldine) Raymond.

A gifted lead guitarist, David played in several bands, including The Sundowners and The Night Owls, sharing his passion for country music wherever he went. Music was a family legacy-his son, David W. Southard, joined The Night Owls as a rhythm guitarist at just 14 years old, a moment David never stopped being proud of. He later passed his musical talent down to his grandchildren as well.

David was known for his sharp, on-the-spot humor and playful sarcasm-never mean, always perfectly timed. He had a lifelong love of radios, first as Wild Man on CB radio and later as a HAM radio operator, KB2ZNY.

Above all else, David put his family first. He is survived by his lover Geraldine Raymond (Gerri), son David W. Southard, daughter-in-law Emma Schenck, his beloved grandchildren Eleanor Southard ("Sparks") and David W. Southard Jr. ("Pooh"), and great-granddaughter Miley May Blake Huffman ("My My"). He also eagerly awaited the arrival of his great-granddaughter Jenna Annmarie-Rae Blake Huffman, due in June 2026, whose name he knew and whose life he celebrated in advance. He was preceded in death by his great-grandson Ryder Ray Blake Huffman.

David will be remembered for his music, his humor, his legendary snack deliveries, and the love he gave so freely to those around him. His presence will be missed-but his stories, laughter, and legacy will live on.

A celebration of David's life will take place in the spring.
