David William Stackhouse, Jr., 97, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2024 at the Elizabeth House in Henderson County.
David was born in Cumberland, Indiana, and grew up in the Indianapolis, IN area of which Cumberland is now a suburb. He was a son to the late David William Stackhouse, Sr. and Dorothy Snider Stackhouse. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Pat (Smith) Stackhouse; his son, Stefan B. Stackhouse and a brother, Paul E. Stevens.
David graduated from Emmerich Manual Training High School and went directly into the U.S. Navy, serving in the South Pacific during World War, II. He attended Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, graduating in 1950 with a BS degree. He spent much of his working life as an industrial designer, ending his career as a contractor for the installation of office furniture systems.
Before moving to North Carolina in 2004 he lived in Brown County, Indiana for 34 years. He was always involved in civic activities and was a 30 year member of LIONS International. He was a charter member of WRAPS, a Brown County literary society. He was also a charter member of American Legion Post 13, and is a Past Commander. He was a former member of Post 13, and also VFW Post 6195, both in Brown County.
He was an Anglican his entire adult life.
David is survived by a daughter-in-law, nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 9, 2024 at 11:00 am at All Saints Anglican Church in Mills River. David will be laid to rest privately at the WNC State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the VFW or to Four Seasons Hospice.
