David Stein

David Stein passed away on July 31st, 2025 at the age of 91. He was a devoted husband for 57

years to Francis Marion Smith, who preceded him in death in January 2019.

David was born January 26, 1934, in San Antonio, Texas but was raised primarily in the Kansas

City area, attending Roseland Grade School and then Shawnee Mission High School. His

connection to his high school classmates would continue with his dedication to keeping them

all updated via the Alumni Directory he proudly produced every year.

After attending the University of Kansas, David graduated from the Army ROTC program and

embarked on a distinguished military career. He began as a Second Lieutenant at Fort Knox,

KY, where he met and married his beloved Marion on June 7, 1961. His first assignment

abroad took them to Germany, where their first son, Jim was born. While acting as a

Company Commander he seized the opportunity to branch transfer to the Adjutant

General Corps and became the Reenlistment Officer for the 8th Infantry Division. In 1965

he was transferred to the JAG School at Charlottesville, Virginia, operating their extension

course program. While there, their second son, John, was born.

Now for the first time in their marriage David was deployed away from his beloved family.

He was assigned as the Director of Administration for the Depot at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam.

At the end of this one-year tour he returned to the States and the Army Materiel Command

in Washington, DC. 3 years later, David would once again be stationed away from his family

for a tour in Korea where he served as the Special Services Officer for all of Korea.

Upon his return to the States in 1973 David was assigned to the US Army Intelligence and

Security Command. David distinguished himself by managing all the administrative aspects

associated with this major Army command. During this period, he first achieved the position of

military commander of his own TDA unit, and later as the civilian Director of that unit.

David retired from the Army on December 31, 1978, with notable accolades including three

Army Commendation Medals, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, and the

Legion of Merit.

Following his military retirement, David transitioned seamlessly into civilian service with the

US Army Intelligence and Security Command. He continued his administrative leadership for

21 years, retiring from the Office of Personnel Management on January 3, 1999. He also

received the Meritorious Civilian Service Award from the Office of Personnel Management.

David's greatest pride and joy was his family. He is survived by his sons Jim and John, their

wives, Tina and Hope and his cherished grandchildren Austin (Taylor), Casey (Alan) , Zachary

and Brooke. David often reflected on his good fortune in finding Marion, and for the

wonderful families his sons created.

David will be laid to rest with his beloved wife, Marion at Quantico National Cemetery in a

private family Graveside Service on August 15, 2025.
