David Truell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Provenzano Lanza Funeral Home Inc. on Jan. 31, 2026.
Celebrating the Life of David Truell, Sr.

January 28, 2026

David Truell, Sr., affectionately known as "Mr. T" long before television made the name

famous, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2026. He was a devoted father,

grandfather, and great-grandfather whose life was defined by perseverance, love, and

quiet strength.

Born in the South, David endured a hard early life. He left Savannah, Georgia, and later

by way of Beaufort, South Carolina. Determined to create a better future, he joined the

United States Army and proudly served for four years before being honorably

discharged. His service shaped the disciplined, steadfast man so many came to

respect.

In 1947, David made his way north to Harlem, New York, where he met the love of his

life, Dorothy Truell. Their love story became a legacy-one that spanned 70 years of

marriage until Dorothy's passing in 2024. Together, they built a family and a home filled

with resilience, loyalty, and love. They raised three children: Vanessa, Zelda, and David

Truell, Jr.

David was a proud grandfather to Rashaan, La'Neke, Raymond Jr., Tiara, and Devon,

and a cherished great-grandfather to Jaiden, Christopher, Christopher, Kameron, and

Israel. He also leaves behind his daughter-in-law Carla Truell; brother and sister-in-law

Frank and Bertha; granddaughter-in-law Karla Espinoza Truell; nieces Felicia Ocasio

and Geraldine Wilson; and nephew Lawrence Wilson.

A man of distinct character, David had strong opinions and a steady presence, but

beneath his stern exterior was a deep love for family and joy in life's simple pleasures.

He loved wrestling, classic black-and-white police shows, Kojak and Columbo, and

Saturday nights spent watching The Honeymooners. He was a devoted New York Mets

fan and a longtime admirer of Charles Barkley.

Warm days often found him sitting contentedly in his chair, either soaking up the sun or

cooling off in the shade. An avid jazz lover, David counted the late Miles Davis and Dick

Gregory among his notable acquaintances-connections that reflected his appreciation

for culture, conversation, and history.

Many will fondly remember the sight of him cruising the neighborhood in his banana-

yellow Cadillac or his gray Roadmaster, or zipping by on his ten-speed bicycle, always

moving with purpose and pride.

David Truell, Sr., lived a life marked by endurance, devotion, and authenticity. His

legacy lives on through the generations. He loved the stories he left behind and the

memories that will continue to bring smiles for years to come.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the life of David Truell, Sr.-for the strength he

carried, the love he gave, and the legacy he leaves behind. Grant comfort to all who

mourn, peace to hearts that grieve, and assurance that he now rests in Your eternal

care. May his memory be a blessing and his spirit live on through those who loved him.

Amen.
