Obituary published on Legacy.com by Provenzano Lanza Funeral Home Inc. on Feb. 7, 2026.
Ernesto Jao Lim of New York City passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on February 5, 2026, at the age of 91. He was born on May 22, 1934 to Sotero Jao and Susana Mancilla Lim in Sorsogon, Philippines. He attended University of the East Economics in Manila. He joined the US Navy in 1961. After his service, he served his community as a banker then a retail store owner. He married Amparo Arboleda on October 13, 1962 in Ohio. They met through a friend, Aurora, while she was working as a nurse in San Juan de Dios Hospital. Together they shared 64 beautiful years dancing together. Ernesto is survived by his wife, his children Jorge and Henry and his wife, Michelle and his grandchildren, Collin, Stephanie, Serena and Sophie. He is predeceased by his son, Arnold, who perished on 911 terror attacks. He is also survived by his siblings, Romy and his wife Chona, Jimmy and his wife Dory and Betty.
Ernesto carried himself with quiet strength and resilience. To those who knew him, he was kind, strict and intelligent. Growing up in the Philippines with 4 brothers ( Armando and Herman passed away few years ago) and a sister, he was surrounded with laughter and unconditional love. He grew up in a big family with relatives in Cebu and cousins in New York and siblings, nephews and nieces in California, Florida and Oregon.
He found pleasure in simple things except for his fascination for Rolex watches. He used to walk around the neighborhood, go to Chinatown to enjoy his favorite coffee/ tea or head to Atlantic City. He has a profound love for old-school music like Frank Sinatra , military hats and watching his favorite television shows like Wheel of Fortune Jeopardy and action movies. He traveled around the world but he considered Philippines and New York his home. He and his wife visited Philippines once year whenever they could. During their 25th wedding anniversary celebration, Ernesto was surprised by his wife Amparo with a church wedding with their kids and relatives around. He lit up every time his grandchildren visited him and treasured every moment spent with them.
