David Mason Uhlir was born in Boston MA on May 19, 1961 to Arthur Uhlir Jr and Ingeborg Neurnberger Uhlir. The youngest of three sons, Dave was raised in the Boston area and attended Tufts University from which he received a BA in Geology in 1983. Following summer field camps in Wyoming with Iowa State University, he moved to Ames, Iowa where he obtained his PhD in Geology from ISU in 1987.
Dave moved to Boulder CO and married Mary Kraus in 1988. Dave was a Petroleum Geologist with Amoco Production Company in Denver from 1988 until 1992, when Amoco moved to Houston. After returning to school and earning an MBA from the University of Colorado in 1994, Dave combined his technical and business degrees to become VP of Product Management at Research Systems Inc from 1994 to 2000. He then worked as a Senior Director at Sun Microsystems and Director of Software Engineering at Cisco until his retirement in 2020.
Dave and his wife, Mary Kraus, had two daughters: Christina Kraus Uhlir and Katherine Kraus Uhlir. A devoted and attentive father, he enjoyed reading to his children, attending their school and athletic events, and traveling with them. He was a loving and supportive husband; Dave and Mary would have celebrated 37 years of marriage in September 2025. A lifelong lover of the outdoors, he could be found hiking the foothills or biking the trails of Boulder with his family. He was also a great traveler, enjoying domestic and international trips with his wife and daughters – and discovering new pastries and drinks wherever he went.
Dave courageously fought a decades-long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. On June 22, 2025, he died peacefully surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Mary; and daughters, Christina and Katherine (Carlos Torrecilla). Dave will be greatly missed.
The family is grateful to Frasier Meadows Memory Support, where Dave was resident for the last 10 months of his life and to Trailwinds Hospice for his final care. Donations to either organization can be made in his honor.
Everyone is welcome to join in a celebration of Dave’s life at 10:30 am on July 16 at 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder 80301.
