David Vandahl Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jan. 13, 2026.
David Evang Vandahl, 86, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at Nick's Health Care in Plattsburg, Missouri. David was deeply loved by many and will be remembered as a remarkably smart and talented man who could fix or build just about anything. Born on January 9, 1940, in Manhattan, Kansas, David was the son of Johannes and Ellen Maria Sophia Thøgesen Vandahl, whose family roots trace back to Bornholm, Denmark. He graduated from Randolph High School in Randolph, Kansas. David proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. His lifelong love of aviation led to a 35-year career with Trans World Airlines (TWA), where he worked as an A&P Mechanic. In addition to his career with TWA, he was also a flight instructor, teaching others how to fly. His mechanical ability, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills were admired by colleagues and friends alike. Because of his love for aviation, David was a longtime member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), joining in 1965. He had a true passion for learning, creating, and helping others. He married Judy Elaine Davis in Weston, Missouri, and together they retired and enjoyed a life filled with shared interests. David was of the Lutheran faith and attended the United Methodist Church of Weston for many years. He generously volunteered his time and talents to charitable causes throughout the Weston area, always willing to lend a hand or share his knowledge. David was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mark Andrew Vandahl; and his sister, Esther Marie Dunlap. His love of family was felt with every helping hand, big hug, and warm smile. He is survived by his beloved wife, Judy; daughters Teresa Marie (Barry) Warden and Amy Lynn (Lee) Garland; grandchildren Seth (Nethanya) Garland and Grant (Savannah) Garland; and great-grandson Ace Elliott Garland. He is also survived by stepsons Bill Friend (daughter Tiffany) and Steve Friend, and stepdaughter Lori (Lew) Meyer (son Clayton). Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 15, at Vaughn Funeral Home in Weston, Missouri. A graveside service will follow at 11:15 a.m. at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Weston. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 276: https://chapters.eaa.org/eaa276
