David Vega Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Forest North Funeral Chapel - Staten Island on Dec. 22, 2025.
David Jesus Latorre Vega, born on November 4, 1947, in San Sebastián, Puerto Rico, entered the world as one of eleven children to José Isabel Latorre and Nicolasa Vega. The large, loving household shaped the warmth and loyalty that would define him throughout his life.
At just sixteen, David moved to New York City, where he spent many of his formative and working years. He began his career as a factory worker near the Sunset Park waterfront before attending trade school and becoming a licensed plumber. He later worked as a transport assistant for the elderly and disabled, a role that reflected his naturally caring spirit. For many years, he also helped run the family's beloved candy store and social club on 49th Street, a gathering place filled with community and conversation.
David married Mireya Latorre, and together they welcomed their daughter, Milagros "Emy" Latorre, his pride and joy. He was also a devoted uncle to dozens of nieces and nephews, offering guidance, humor, and unwavering support.
In 2001, David returned to his cherished Isla del Encanto - Puerto Rico, settling back into the peaceful rhythms of Barrio Calabasa in San Sebastián. There, he found companionship with his partner, Carmen "Annie," whose care and devotion accompanied him through his later years. Some of his happiest moments were spent with his granddaughter, Miranda Renee Luzon, whose time living with him gifted them both memories that the family now holds close, especially after her passing from terminal illness.
Due to his own health challenges, David returned to New York City in 2023, hoping to receive advanced care. He faced his illness with courage and dignity, and when the time came, he passed gently and peacefully, surrounded by the loved ones he cherished most.
David is survived by his daughter, Emy Latorres, and his grandchildren Eryck Rios and Myah Rios. His living siblings include José Arnaldo Latorre, Doyle Latorre, Nilda Latorre, German Latorre, and Abismael Latorre. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, with special gratitude to his nephew Bobby Serrano, who walked closely with him through his most difficult days.
He departs this world leaving behind a wide circle of family, friends, and community members whose lives were brightened by his presence, his humor, and his steadfast heart.
David will be laid to rest beside his beloved granddaughter, and part of his ashes will be returned to the ocean in his Puerto Rican homeland-his eternal motherland.
May his memory be a blessing, and may his journey home bring him peace.
