With love and sadness, the family of David E. Walsh of Astoria, NY, announces his peaceful
passing on July 24th, 2025. Born on May 11th, 1928, Dave lived a long and happy life. He is
survived by his wife, Peggy (nee Kelly), daughters Meg and Jean Ann Pipia (Paul), and his
precious granddaughter, Margaret.
Dave is the son of Irish immigrants, the late Margaret (nee Sweeney) and Andrew Walsh, and
stepfather Dennis Doherty. Dave, known as "Sonny" to many, is predeceased by his sister, Ann
Fay (John.) Dave loved his family and was both an uncle and great uncle to many.
While born in the Bronx, Dave grew up in the farmlands of Astoria with his beloved dog Nellie,
attending local public schools, including Bryant High School. Dave married Peggy, also from
Astoria, on October 6th, 1956.
Dave went on to join the NYPD in the early '50s and retired in 1990 as a full Inspector. His
career spanned several decades and included assignments throughout New York City. Dave's
police career was briefly interrupted by a call from his country to serve in the Army as an MP
during the Korean crisis.
Following his retirement, Dave continued with the hobbies he had taken up while working,
including golf, travel, and building elaborate birdhouses. He was a gentleman of strong
character, an excellent confidant, and a man filled with gratitude and love for his family and
friends. Christmas Day at Aunt Peggy and Uncle Dave's was an annual highlight, fondly
remembered by all. His life is one to be celebrated and remembered; he dedicated himself to
serving his family, community, city, and country.
