David Watkins Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Gordon Funeral Home - Durant on Mar. 10, 2026.
David Glen Watkins of Carrollton, Texas passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026, at 9:32 pm.

David Glen Watkins was brought into this world on July 31, 1946, in Caddo, Oklahoma. In the time of World War II, new ideas, and Harry S. Truman. David came out with bright blue eyes, dark hair, and a beautiful personality. Caddo was a small town, and David grew up on a farm, with a mother, father, and 9 brothers and sisters. Growing up with all the siblings seemed very crowded, but growing up with a loving family, he's learned to share and get along well with others, which are qualities of him he takes to his heart, even at the oldest of age.

When he was coming to be a bright young man, doing fairly well after graduating high school, David met a girl name Linda Higle. The two were set up on a date by his sister and her best friend, Judy. Judy planned for them to go out on a date together, along with her and another boy. But in the end, Judy left the couple she arranged for a date with and left them alone. In the end, David and Linda got married on November 21, 1969.

On January 4, 1972, the couple welcomed the first child, a baby girl named Ginger Gail Watkins in Dennison, Texas. A year later, David decided to go to college at Southeast Oklahoma University graduating in 1977 with a degree in mathematics and two minor degrees in computer science and safety education. David used these degrees to his advantage by becoming a system analyst. In between these improving years, he and Linda welcomed another daughter into the world, a fiery redheaded daughter named Vanessa Lynn Watkins. Then, one week shy of four years later, David and Linda welcomed another child into the world, a baby boy named David Nicholas Watkins.

David and Linda made their best memories together just by raising their children, he took great pride in it and enjoyed every minute of it. The children indeed have very different personalities, but in the end, the one thing they have that is the same about them is their loving heart they gained from their caring parents.

David's life underwent some more changes when his children started having children; soon, David became known as "Gramps", "Papa", and "Grandpa". David lived life very simply, his hobbies included reading about politics, watching golf, and spending time with his family. David made many friends over the years. When you ask Linda, what thing you can always notice about him she'll tell you he's very talkative.

In the end, once you look at the simple things in David's life you indeed see the beauty. David was a beautiful, intelligent person, a man who could solve algebraic problems in his head like it was basic addition, a man who is interested in you no matter how you dress or what race you are, and a man who loved his family.

David was preceded in death by his parents; Vance Watkins and Pearl Inez Watkins, brothers; Donald Watkins, Andy Watkins, Jimmy Watkins, and Harold Watkins, sister; Lora Louise McGrew.

David is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Linda Watkins of home, daughter Ginger Cantrell of Lindale, TX, Daughter Vanessa Eustice and husband Harold of Carrollton, TX, David Nicholas Watkins and wife Randi of Forney, TX, 10 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers are grandsons; Zachary McLean, Nathan Deason, Drew Deason, Kristian Staton, Darin Hilton and family friend, Ronald Guevara. Honorary pallbearers are grandsons, Marshall Watkins, Mason Eustice, Braxton Watkins, and Grayson Williams.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at The Gordon Center, 305 N 2nd Ave, Durant, OK from 10:00am to 11:00am, followed by a procession to Gethsemane Cemetery in Caddo, OK.
