David Weatherly Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by John O. Morris Funeral Home on Jan. 9, 2026.
DAVID ARNOLD WEATHERLY was born on December 6, 1978 to Vanessa Pettyjohn Weatherly and Joe Lewis Weatherly. He peacefully transitioned on January 6, 2026 surrounded by family. David was a man whose presence could brighten any space - known for his unforgettable smile and bold personality.

David was predeceased by his maternal and paternal grandparents: George William Beach Jr., Cornelia Pettyjohn, Madeline Weatherly, and Joe Lewis Sample; as well as his step grandparents, Kenneth and Sarah Ann Parker.

David grew up on the Eastern Shore, attending schools in both Accomack and Northampton County. At a young age David loved sports. He played football in school and would later go on to coach at Broadwater Academy. One of David's greatest joys was coaching football. He wasn't just a coach; he was a mentor, a motivator, and a steady source of encouragement for every young person who had the privilege of learning from him. His passion for the game was matched only by his passion for helping others grow, both on and off the field. He would say that every kid that stepped on the field became his responsibility and he took that seriously.

Throughout his life, David worked in several roles that reflected his dedication and strong work ethic. He spent time at Bayshore Concrete, Shore Memorial Hospital before finding his home with the City of Norfolk. The Streets and Bridges crew became his family. No matter the job, he approached his work with reliability, kindness, and a willingness to lend a hand.

David's life would seem too short to many, but for those who were touched by him they will understand the quality of his existence far exceeds the quantity. He loved his friends and family to the fullest and would do anything that was asked of him. He had a big heart.

David is survived by his loving parents, Vanessa Pettyjohn Weatherley of Painter, VA, and Joe Lewis Weatherley of Daugherty, VA. Leaving to cherish his memory are his wife, Danielle Weatherly of Exmore, VA, and their children: Dontae (Taniya) of Exmore, VA; Dejah (Mark) Weatherly of Richmond, VA; and Dakiya Weatherly of Eastville,VA. He was a proud grandfather to four grandchildren: DeAndre Weatherly, Ava Braxton, Lyriq Weatherly and step granddaughter Keloni Beckett. He is also survived by two sisters, Cornelia Weatherley of Killeen, TX, and Chicnika Weatherley of Eastville, VA; and his nieces and nephews: Avery Custis Jr. of Killeen, TX; E'Lebeon Weatherley of Eastville, VA; Taqwain Drummond of Alexandria, VA; Emony Destine of Spring, TX; and Tiffany Diggs of Alexandria, VA. David's aunts: Alice Taylor of Upper Marlboro, MD; Ellen Burrows of Milton, DE; Rennie Pettyjohn of Exmore,VA; Patricia Armwood of Princess Anne, MD; Annie (James) Kellam of Exmore, VA; Janice (Burleigh) Walters of Exmore, VA; Gay (Dana) Roberts of Felton, DE; and Marie(Rufus) Lewis of Birdsnest, VA . His uncles: Samuel (Christine) Pettyjohn of Disputanta, VA; William Pettyjohn of Georgetown, DE; Thomas (Anordia) Weatherly of Chesapeake, VA; and Leroy (Linda) Weatherly of Exmore, VA. His mother in law: Eartha Nottingham of Exmore, Va, one sister in law Tonja(Larry)Diggs of Alexandria, Va and his brother in law Juan Nottingham of Capeville, VA. He also leaves to cherish his memory a special cousin he lovingly called his aunt, Reba Wharton of Hare Valley, VA, along with his cousin Muneer Moore who served as a confidant and a brother to him. Darryl, his best friend and co-worker. A relationship that brought strength, laughter, and unwavering support . He along with a host of cousins, extended family, and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts. Precious Memories David's kindness, humor, and genuine heart left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched through friendship, family, and the teams he guided with such dedication.
