David Wright Obituary

David Thomas Wright, 70, died peacefully at home in Tupelo on October 6, 2025, after a short illness. He was born January 21, 1955, in Amory, MS to the late Clyde Wright and Arlene Chism Wright. He grew up surrounded by a large, tight knit extended family and first cousins that were more like brothers and sisters. David graduated from Amory High School in 1973 where he played football and made lifelong friends.

David married his high school sweetheart Debbie Bailey in August of 1974 and considered his 51-year marriage his greatest accomplishment. David and Debbie shared so many adventures and hobbies over the years. They especially loved gardening and landscaping all the homes they lived in and renovated. He could build just about anything and was so creative. He was able to take all of Debbie’s design ideas and make them come to life.

David was a great storyteller and enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and friends. He was devoted to his family and wanted to spend every hour of every day with them. Whether it was cooking supper for his kids or playing marathon games of Rook, he always wanted everyone to be together and have a good time. He was the life of the party and was hilarious with the tales of his childhood with cousins and uncles and would sing Credence Clearwater Revival just to make everyone laugh. Midnight Special was his theme song. His grandchildren were his world, and he never missed a football game or band performance. He had a servant’s heart that was always on display. He loved his rescue pets—Butch, Bella, Kitty Kat, Itty Bitty and Claws.

He worked at White’s Auto and Scribner Equipment Company in his younger years but spent the biggest part of his working years in the furniture industry at Townhouse-Penthouse and Peoplounger before becoming an electrician. He could make anything, build anything, cook anything or fix anything but he would be quick to remind people he was not a plumber.

He was a patriot and loved his country and his President Donald J. Trump.

David loved his Savior Jesus and spent so many hours waiting in the school line reading the Bible he kept in his truck. He was proud to share his love of the Lord with his family. He attended St. Andrews United Methodist Church as a child and then attended Meadowood Baptist Church after his marriage. He was a founding member of Wildwood Baptist Church and was one of the first deacons.

David leaves behind a family that will miss him forever, including his loving wife of 51 years, Debbie Bailey Wright and his children Suzy Wright, Beth Wright, and Brooks (Julianne) Wright and his favorite people in the world, his grandchildren Baylee Wright, Chase Wright, Harrison Wright and Hayden Wright. He also leaves behind his nephews Scott Nations annd Brent Nations; special friends Beverly Hamilton, Patsy & Mike Shannon and Lady Holman along with a host of cousins that he loved dearly.

David was preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Arlene Wright, son Christopher David Wright, brother Clyde Francis Wright, brother and sister in law Jerry and Carolyn Nations, nephew Mike Wright and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins and his best friend and Rook cheating partner Elmer Hamilton.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to David’s caretakers over the past 4 months, especially the nurses and support staff at Gentiva Home Hospice, the nurses at NMMC Home Health, the staff at UAB Birmingham and Dr. Mythri Mudireddy and her nurse Jackie.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 PM on Friday, October 10, 2025 at Cleveland Moffett Funeral Home in Amory with Mr. Mike Shannon and Bro. Chuck Moffett officiating. Burial will follow in Amory Historical Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ricky Stevenson, Paul Wright, Kenny Hood, Jake Hathcock, Brad Hamilton and Jerry Rakestraw.
