Dean Edward Bartels was born June 27, 1944, in Elma, Iowa, the son of Leonard and Gladys (Lauck) Bartels. He graduated from Waterloo West High School with the class of 1963. After high school, Dean started working at John Deere in the foundry, and later moving to tractor cab, retiring after 29 years. After retirement, he worked for Lewis Armory. Dean married Marcia Myers in 1966, they later divorced. He then married Joyce Newton and she preceded him in death. In 2004, Dean married Carol Coyne Segebarth.
Dean loved woodworking, being outdoors and animals. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, boating and camping. Dean was an active member at Trinity American Lutheran Church.
Dean passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at UPH – Allen Memorial, at the age of 81. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Rosalene Schumacher; two sisters-in-laws, Connie Bartels and Ruth Bartels and a brother-in-law, George Schumacher. Dean is survived by his wife, Carol of Waterloo; daughter, Tami (William) Wylie of LaPorte City; son, Troy Bartels of Waterloo; step-son, Eric Coyne of Iowa City; step-daughter, Amy Pavlek of Waterloo; six grandchildren, Hope Runge, Haley (Noah) Gehrke, Chase Runge, Caden (Leonie Sabanagic) Runge, Nicholas (Karina) Bartels and Alex (Brittany Dixon) Bartels; seven great-grandchildren, Naomi, Ophelia, Gideon, Wrenley Bartels, Emory, and Maci and Boston Gehrke; four step-grandchildren, Ben and Caitlyn Wylie and Mia and Ryan Pavlek; three brothers, Allen Bartels of Waterloo, Wayne Bartels of Phoenix and Gary (Marcia) Bartels of Mingo; sister, Carolyn (Dave) McAnally of La Vista, Nebraska and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
Visitation: Wednesday, October 1, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, 965 Home Plaza.
Service: Thursday, October 2, 2025, at 10:30 am, at Trinity American Lutheran Church, 605 W. 4th St., Waterloo.
Burial: Following the service at Garden of Memories
