Dean Francis Freeman

After a long and fulfilling life, Dean Francis Freeman passed away peacefully in his home on December 3, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 84 years old.

Born in Washington, Dean was raised primarily in Ashland, Oregon. He was one of seven children.

Dean was known as an exceptionally kind man with a gentle spirit, dedicating his life to education, his craft, and his family.

In the early part of his career, Dean served in the Army after being drafted. He would often joke about his "invitation from the President." Following his military service, he continued working as an audio-visual specialist, first as a civilian employee for the Army, and later for the Navy.

Dean was a gifted professional photographer dedicated to generously sharing his expertise as a college professor by teaching photography. He inspired many students over his almost 50 years at Laney College in the Bay Area.

While at the same time, Dean was a true steward of the land through farming by working his almond orchards tirelessly for most of his adult life.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, brother Rusty and sister Kathy. Survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Josie, his five children: Deana, Michele, James, Gold and Jason. Also survived by his brothers and sisters Ernie, Donald, Sue and Dorothy.

He was a loving grandfather to 10 grandchildren and a proud uncle to many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Per his request, no formal funeral will be held. A graveside service will be held on December 12th at 11:00 AM at Arbuckle Cemetery, 400 State Highway 99W, Arbuckle, California.
