Dean MOTTES Obituary

Published by Canale Tonella Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Marquette on Jan. 30, 2013.
Dean Gerald Mottes, age 52, passed away January 30, 2013, surrounded by the loving care of his family at Marquette General Hospital. Dean was born June 9, 1960 in Marquette to Mary Ann (Casagranda) Mottes and Gerald Mottes. He graduated from Gwinn High School in 1979. Dean attended Northern Michigan University where he studied business, and also attended Northwestern Community College and successfully completed pilot training courses. His interest in business led to a variety of business ventures in Arizona including the Supersonic Car Wash, the Wine Barrell Restaurant and Cheese House, Peoria Athletic Club, the owner of a vending machine business, and Savon. He met and married Debra Smith, and moved back to Gwinn after starting a family. He became the manager of Ace Hardware and also incorporated the Savon mail order business in that same building. Savon's success demanded expansion, and Dean moved his mail order business to a larger facility in Gwinn. In 2006 Dean had a tragic diving accident which left him a quadriplegic. Dean's father bought out his Savon business and built him a handicapped home with 24 hour care. Dean stayed continually involved with his Savon business until his death. Dean was a genuinely compassionate person. He always saw the positive aspects in others, and wanted to help people in need. Dean found humor in many things. He was known for having a bounce in his step and a sparkle in his eyes. Dean enjoyed fishing, hunting, sports, golf, and get togethers with friends. He was an avid Packer fan. Dean was a member of St. Anthony's Parish. His greatest pride and joy were his three sons, Jared, Jason, and Jesse. Dean is survived by his parents, Mary Ann and Gerald Mottes; three sons, Jared, Jason, and Jesse; grandson, Dean Michael Mottes; former wife, Debra Smith; two sisters, Deborah (Tim) Goldsworthy and Deanna (Leon) Newbert; two nieces, Rachael and Jessica Goldsworthy; and two nephews, Leon and Ryan Newbert, along with various cousins. Visitation will take place at the Canale-Gwinn Funeral Home from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2013 with a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at St. Anthony's Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. John Boyle officiating. Interment will take place in the Gwinn Cemetery in the spring. Donations may be made to the Wheelin Sportsman Program to Kenny Buchholtz, (906) 553-2268.
