She was born on January 20, 1956 in Fitzgerald, GA to the late John Samuel and Willie Luke Owens Holt. As a Fitzgerald native, she grew up with a love for the outdoors that she carried throughout her life. Whether it was hunting, fishing, or spending days out on the river- especially Ocmulgee River, she never turned down a chance to be outside. She built her life in Fitzgerald, working at Dorminy Medical Center for 31 years and retired as the Director of Environmental Services. Debbie used her love of people and her community to drive her career. She had a true genuine spirit and affection for people- she loved to surround herself with friends and strangers alike- sharing stories, music, and good times Her love of life and others guided her to opening and owning the "One More" bar, which was the spot in Fitzgerald for more than 20 years. Whether Debbie knew you for 5 minutes or 35 years, you were someone special to her and her kind, giving spirit always left others better than how she found them. DR was a true sports model- one of a kind and all who she leaves behind will forever remember their times shared with her and the big, bold personality of DR- whose love, light, and legacy will carry on forever.
Survivors include her daughter- Carla Roberts Shiver(Andy) of Fitzgerald, sisters- Susan Anglon and Donna Faircloth of Fitzgerald, nephews and nieces- Brian Owens(Heather) of Hawkinsville, Timmy Burch of Fitzgerald, Michael Owens(Amy)of Fitzgerald and several great nieces and nephews, as well as many friends near and far.
In addition to DR's parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Glenda Eason of Alapaha, GA, Gloria Owens of Fitzgerald, GA, one brother, John Michael "Mike" Owens of Fitzgerald, GA and her two companions- Robert "Bob" Karraker and Lewis Hulett of Fitzgerald, GA.
The family will hold a private service at a later date.
