Deborah Faye Dixon Covington, affectionately known as "Big Deb" to many and "Big Girl" to her older brother, passed away on August 6, 2024, at the age of 69. Born on July 8, 1955, in
Dothan, Alabama, she was the beloved daughter of the late Mattie Dixon and the late Steve Barlow, Jr. Her vibrant spirit and profound love for her family, friends, and community left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Deborah's life was one of service and dedication. She graduated from Dothan High School in 1973 and pursued her passion for helping others by attending George C. Wallace Community College's Nursing Program. Her commitment to caring for those in need led her to a fulfilling career as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Southeast Alabama Medical Center, now known as Southeast Health. Beyond her professional life, Deborah served her country with honor in the US Army Reserves, achieving the rank of Sergeant before receiving an honorable discharge.
Her involvement in the community was extensive and heartfelt. Deborah was a proud member of the South Alabama Black Women's Round Table and a former Daughter of the Wiregrass Elks Lodge, Temple #566. Her lifelong membership in the African Methodist Episcopal Church culminated at Stringer Street AME Church. There, she served as a member of the Bigham-Long's Women's Missionary Society and joyfully took on the role of bus driver, ensuring members could attend services and events.
Deborah's zest for life was evident in her hobbies and pastimes. An avid Pinochle player, she traveled the nation to compete in tournaments, showcasing her skill and love for the game. Her enthusiasm for Bingo was equally well-known; when Deborah said she was "going to work," friends and family recognized her playful code for enjoying her favorite game.
Deborah was preceded in death by her loving husband: Clarence "Baba" Covington, her parents, and two brothers: Reggie Dixon, and Steve Barlow, III.
Her memory will be cherished and kept alive by her siblings: Alfonse (Jeanette) Dixon of Suffolk, VA; Carolyn (Reggie) Kyles, Mellissa (Horace) Jackson of
Dothan, AL; Rodney (Sheila) Barlow of Opp, AL; sister-in-law Phyllis Barlow of Milton, WA; Barbara Kirkland of
Dothan, AL; and LaVonda (Derrick) Potter of Aurora, CO. Her Aunt: Connie Dixon of Montgomery, AL; a special nephew, Darion (LaToya) Covington of Atlanta, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and an abundance of friends will also hold Deborah dear in their hearts.
As we remember Deborah, we recall the words of the great poet Maya Angelou, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Deborah made everyone she met feel important, loved, and valued. Her legacy of kindness, generosity, and spirited laughter will continue to resonate with those who were fortunate to have known her.
Deborah Faye Dixon Covington lived her life with passion and purpose. She was a beacon of light and an example of love in action. As we say farewell, we celebrate the extraordinary life she led and the countless lives she touched. Her spirit, a blend of compassion and vivacity, will remain a guiding force for all who carry her memory forward.
