Debra Rogers Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chamberland Funerals & Cremations on Mar. 3, 2026.
Debra Kaye Rogers, a devoted mother, cherished grandmother, aunt, sister, mentor, and dear friend, entered eternal rest peacefully on February 23, 2026, at the age of 70, in DeSoto, Texas.

On October 11, 1955, in Little Rock, Arkansas, a beautiful light entered the world, a light that would shine brightly in classrooms, in her community, and most especially in the hearts of her family and friends. Born to the late Mary Ellen Bedford and the late Anthony "Bo Mixon" Rogers, she carried forward a family legacy marked by strength and faith.

During her childhood, Debra shared her early years between Arkansas and California, building lifelong connections and experiences in both places she called home. She began her educational journey at Rockport Elementary in Malvern, Arkansas, and later attended George Washington Elementary in Compton, California. Her formative years included time at Tuggle Elementary and Pratt Elementary in Malvern; Foshay Junior High School and Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles; and Wilson High School in Malvern. She proudly graduated from Malvern High School in 1973, and shortly thereafter continued her studies at Ouachita Vo-Tech Business School, Class of 1974.

Her love for learning never stopped, and as a devoted single mother, Debra carried that curiosity and determination into every stage of life, always striving to create a brighter future for her children. After the Levi's Jean Factory closed, she seized the opportunity to enroll in college at age 35, determined to provide stability and opportunity for her son, Torrey, and her daughter, Nakesha "Kesha." In 1994, Debra earned her Bachelor of Arts in Science Education from Henderson State University, a testament to her courage, perseverance, discipline, and unwavering sense of purpose.

Teaching was more than Debra's profession; it was her ministry. Following the completion of her degree, her inspiring journey back to school was recognized in the Malvern Daily Record. Throughout her career, she became an award-winning educator and trusted mentor, touching the lives of students across multiple districts and campuses. She was honored as Teacher of the Year in two school districts, a distinguished recognition of her excellence in the classroom, her leadership among peers, and her profound impact on students and families alike.

With numerous accolades to her name, she poured wisdom, patience, and compassion into every classroom she entered. She believed every child mattered. She believed every student could succeed. She believed education was a pathway to purpose. Generations of students carry her lessons not only in their minds, but in their hearts. She did not simply teach subjects; she taught confidence, dignity, and possibility.

After more than two decades of shaping young minds, she retired in 2019, leaving behind not only lesson plans and awards but a legacy of confidence instilled, potential awakened, and futures forever changed.

But if teaching was her calling, family was her heart.

She delighted in every detail of family life, planning holiday menus months in advance and pouring love into each meal she prepared. Her kitchen was her ministry, nourishing both body and heart. Nothing brought her greater pride or deeper joy than her children and grandchildren. She loved her children wholeheartedly and her grandchildren beyond measure. To them, she was not only Mom and "Granny," but cheerleader, prayer warrior, family historian, and storyteller.

Debra had a gift for laughter. Whether through a quick wit, a playful smile, or one of her unforgettable expressions, she made others feel seen and uplifted. Her sense of humor could light up a room and bring comfort in difficult moments.

She also had a remarkable gift for serving others without fanfare. She offered wise counsel, steady support, and practical help quietly, often behind the scenes, embodying the principle of doing good in secret. Her kindness touched countless lives, and her generosity was guided by a faith that valued humility and love above recognition. Those who knew her knew that her strength and compassion were a steady light, a reflection of a life lived in quiet devotion to God and others.

A woman grounded in faith, Debra found strength and reassurance in the Book of Psalms, often reflecting on verses that spoke of God's protection, courage, and unfailing love. Her life itself was a living testimony to those promises. She nurtured her faith at First Baptist-Vine during her children's early years and later continued her spiritual journey at Bethel A.M.E.

Perseverance defines her story, a quiet, steady courage that carried her through life's fiercest storms and allowed her to bloom in seasons where others might have withered. She did not merely endure; she transformed hardship into strength and pain into purpose.

Though she is no longer physically present, the lessons she imparted, the laughter she shared, and the love she so freely gave will echo through generations. Her story does not end here; it lives on in all of us.

Debra Kaye Rogers was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Ellen Bedford and Anthony "Bo" Mixon Rogers; her grandmothers, Odessa Powell Wells (maternal) and Ruth Mixon Mendenhall (paternal); her grandfathers, Benton Bedford (maternal) and Jadie Mendenhall (paternal); her great-grandmothers, Hattie Mixon (paternal) and Lizzie Welch Bedford (maternal); her great-grandfathers, Deat Mixon (paternal) and Athon Powell (maternal); and her brother, Ralph Wells.

She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Torrey E. Carroll, and her daughter-in-love, Olanikki Burman-Carroll of DeSoto, Texas; her daughter, Nakesha D. Reddick-Ayala, and her husband, Roberto Ayala of Red Oak, Texas; and her beloved grandchildren, Jayden Elijah Guinn, Zachary Hudson Jovaun Carroll, Madison Jennifer Daye Carroll, Simone Alise Reddick, Sydney Elise Reddick, Jaxsen Alijah Reddick, as well as a host of extended family members and cherished friends. Debra's grandchildren were among God's greatest blessings in her life. Each was uniquely treasured, fervently prayed over, and deeply loved, truly the apple of her eye and a reflection of the faith she carried in her heart.
