Batavia - Delena S. Zipfel, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, February 28, 2026. Born on April 18, 1934, in Gilbert, West Virginia, Delena is the daughter of the late Monroe and Meda Morgan Carter.
Delena dedicated many years as an assembler with Delco/General Motors in Rochester, a position from which she retired. She began her career at G.T.E. Sylvania in Batavia.
She was known for her love of embroidery and sewing, and for her joy in entertaining friends and family. Delena had a special gift for music; she delighted in playing her guitar and singing her favorite songs.
Delena's legacy lives on through her surviving family: her children, Kathy Yungfleisch of Elba, Rosie (Alan) Yungfleisch of Elba, David (Barb) Dietrich of Batavia, and Daniel (Mary) Dietrich of Williamsville. She also leaves behind her treasured grandchildren, Kristen (Tom) Englerth of Stafford, Adam Yungfleisch of Elba, Joseph Dietrich of Buffalo, Petra Dietrich of North Carolina, Tom (Samantha) Bieler of Darien Center, and Anne Bodensteiner of Akron, and 13 adoring great-grandchildren. Additionally, Delena is survived by her step-children: Robert (Linda) Zipfel of Elba, William (Joyce) Zipfel of Oakfield, Carol Green of Oakfield, Ellen Edwards of Texas, and Patricia (Barry) Aradine of Bergen. She also leaves behind her step-grandchildren: Sarah (Christopher) Norton of Elba, Timothy (Christine) Zipfel of Pavilion, Carissa (Brian) Bell of Indiana, Courtney (Joseph) Mailhot of Lancaster, Caitlin (David) Lute of Stafford, Amy (Mark) Herman of Warsaw, Christine (Nathan) Boggs of Texas, Brandon (Megan) Aradine of Byron, and Justin Aradine of Bergen, along with 18 step great-grandchildren. Her brother, Ronnie Carter, several nieces and nephews, also survive.
She was predeceased by her loving spouse, James I. Zipfel, her siblings Faye Roth, Shirley Gill, Monroe Carter, Bennie Carter, Dennie Carter, and Donnie Carter and her step-grandson Craig Waterman.
There are no prior calling hours. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 am at Elba Presbyterian Church, 23 North Main Street, Elba. She will be laid to rest in Maplelawn Cemetery, Elba. Donations can be made in Delena's memory to Johnny's Angels Home Helpers, LLC, 890 Cohocton Road, Corfu, New York 14036.
