Delores Canning Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Mountain View Funeral Home & Crematory - Lewiston on Dec. 1, 2025.
Delores Ann Canning, 90, passed away Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025, of natural causes at home.

She was born Feb. 15, 1935, in Lewiston, to Alfred DesJardin and Olga Schoening. As this was during the heart of the Great Depression, the family moved several times for work and eventually settled on a farm near Deary.

She moved to Lewiston in the 1950s and met her husband of 52 years, George Canning. The family lived at several homes in the Lewiston Orchards before settling on Richardson Avenue for many years. They built a retirement home south of Lewiston on Vollmer Road in 1992 where she enjoyed planting flowers and trees and caring for her horses, chickens, cats and dog, and babysitting her grandchildren and organizing an annual community Fourth of July parade for them.

After all her children started school, she started volunteering as a bus aide and driver for Lewiston Head Start. She was eventually promoted to Support Services and Transportation Coordinator. She worked with Head Start programs in many of the surrounding towns including Lewiston, Clarkston, Asotin, Orofino and Riggins, and attended many regional and national Head Start conferences, eventually retiring in 2006.

Delores is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brothers Raymond DesJardin and Richard Burnvik. She is survived by her daughter Judy Canning, of Anahim Lake, British Columbia, Canada; and four sons: Wade Canning and wife Jerri, of Clarkston, Tim and wife Dee, Jason and wife Jamie, and John Canning, all of Lewiston. She is also survived by her brother Robert DesJardin and sisters Sis Windsor and Annette Schenck. Delores was blessed with nine grandchildren: Guy Jensen; Rachel, Andrew (AJ) and Ryan Canning; Amanda and Aundrea Canning; Joshua and Zachary Canning, and Paige Haddock, five great-grandchildren: Wyatt and Amanda Jensen; Luna Walters; Jayce and Kinsley Canning, two great-great-grandchildren: Avery and Slade Jensen, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at Mountain View Funeral Home, 3521 Seventh St., Lewiston.
