Delores Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 5, 2013.
"I've had some good days, I've had some hills to climb, I've had some weary days and some sleepless nights, but when I look around and think things over all of my good days outweigh my bad days. I won't complain. Delores Smith was born July 24, 1960 in Paterson, NJ. She was the third of seven children born to Katie Capers and the late Leo Capers, Sr. "Lois" as she was affectionately called by family and friends, was a product of the Paterson Public School System and a graduate of Passaic County Technical Institute in Wayne, NJ. Delores was a lifelong part of the St. Luke Baptist Church. At a young age she confessed Christ as her personal savior, was baptized and united with the St. Luke Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. A.M. Tyler. Her lifelong participation afforded her the opportunity to grow in her faith, serve God, and to develop relationships with persons of all ages who became a part of her extended family. In 1999 Delores was recorrirnended to serve as a Trustee and faithfully served in this ministry until her health challenges prevented her from doing so. In addition to serving as a Trustee, Delores faithfully attended Mid Week Prayer and Bible Study, Women's Bible Study, and was a member of the Patricia Tyler Guild. She formerly served on the New Discipleship Team, Children's Nursery, Inspirational Choir, Mass Choir, Sunday Bible Study, and Culinary Ministry. In all of her involvements she served with a commitment to do her absolute best in helping people and honoring the Lord. For over thirty years, Delores was employed by Columbia Bank of Fair Lawn, NJ. Throughout her long employment tenure, Delores held a variety of positions and roles. At the time of her death, she was employed as a Demand Deposit Officer. As was true in church, Delores' warmth, laughter, and concern for others endeared her to her coworkers and they too became a part of her family. Delores had a great love for people, and she was willing to help anyone in any way that she could. Her home was always open, she was willing to lend a helping hand, give counsel and advice or prepare a meal. She was always full of laughter and humor. Her smile comforted many. Her genuinely loving personality will greatly be missed. Delores was blessed with a large and loving family. Although her friendships and extended family were many, her husband, children, grandchildren, mother, siblings, nieces, nephews, and other relatives were cherished by her. She enjoyed the many family gatherings that she shared with them. On Friday, July 5, 2013, Delores' earthly life came to an end. She had faced the reality of her immortality with courage, confidence and faith. It was her faith that gave her the strength to comfort her family and friends during the last days of her life. Delores was predeceased in death by her beloved father Leo Capers, Sr. Delores' love, memory and inspiration will forever be engraved in the hearts of her husband Brian; three daughters Latoya, Danielle, and Imani; her mother Katie Capers; sisters Coretta (James) Mc Williams and Sonja Capers; brothers Mike (Vela Mae) Mills, Leo (Marisa) Capers, Jr., Timothy (Gail) Capers and Todd (Cornelia) Capers; grandson ("Granny's Man") Zacchaeus Flowers; granddaughter Le'Asia Lamb, a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, adopted children; her "sister girls", adopted brothers, co-workers, friends, neighbors and church family.
