Dennis Brinley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Owen Funeral Home - Dixie Highway on Jan. 20, 2026.
Dennis Lee Brinley, 72, of Louisville, Kentucky passed away on January 17, 2026. He was born on February 27, 1953, to his late parents, Dorothy and Samuel Brinley. He was a graduate of Durrett High School and a retired firefighter from the city of Louisville, after 23 years of service.

He was a man known by many names, each reflecting a different part of the life he so generously shared. To the children at church, he was Mr. Dennis-the beloved "gum man" and "paper airplane man"-who could often be found with a brief case full of folded planes and pockets full of gum, joyfully volunteering his time with the youth ministry. A devoted deacon at St. Mathews Baptist Church, he served with faith, kindness, and a servant's heart. To his children, he was Dad, a steady source of unwavering love, compassion, and guidance. He was also known as a loving Husband, and in that role, he was deeply supportive and devoted. To his grandchildren, he was Poppy, his most cherished title and the one that brought him the greatest joy. Friendly, social, and always quick with a smile, he loved spending his days golfing, fishing, and playing guitar, leaving behind countless memories and a legacy of love that will live on in all who knew him.

Dennis is lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Sara Brinley; children, Eric Brinley (Jennifer) and Melissa Galloway (Jeremy); grandchildren, Emma and Luke; bonus grandchildren, Everett and Lydia; brothers, Stuart Brinley (Pam), Donald Brinley (Kay), and Danny Brinley (Karla); sister, Susie Humphrey; and a host of nieces and nephews.

His funeral services will be held at St. Mathews Baptist Church, 3515 Grandview Ave. His visitation will be from 1:00-3:00 PM and his celebration of life will start at 3:00.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to St Mathews Baptist Church Student Ministry.

Mr. Dennis was my neighbor growning up. I remember I was practicing lacrosse one afternoon and he gave me $100 as a donation to my team. It was so kind. I only have fond memories of him.

I so just read the message of Mr. Dennis passing, it was breath-taking to say the least and i was glad to be sitting when i read it. I will always remember him joyfully playing with the children in the grand view room at SMBC, with his brief case filled with paper airplanes and the children giggling as they wizzed by our heads. He volunteered in the kitchen and Love 40207. He was a big part of mine and my families lives through church. He is going to be sadly missed. May all our tears be shed to water your garden in heaven. Love Heather, Marcos, and Bryant'Tavis.

I have always respected Dennis ever since I met him and he was really into flying air hogs at the time and he was always very kind to me and everyone around him and had his feet planted firmly on the ground to me and even after being a retired firefighter he would always have helped someone that was in need im very thankful to have known him and my heart goes out to all the family
