Dennis Castleman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lasting Tributes Cremation and Funeral Care, P.A. on Jan. 19, 2026.
Dennis Michael Castleman passed away peacefully on January 17, 2026 after a 15-year battle with Alzheimer's. He was born on August 14, 1956, to Richard and Marian Castleman in Cincinnati, Ohio, and graduated from Finneytown High School. From humble beginnings, he built an exceptional career in hospitality, travel, and tourism through hard work, dedication, and a genuine love of people. Dennis began his hospitality career at a resort in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania in 1980. From there, he joined ITT Sheraton Corporation and spent seventeen years working at several hotels in the Sheraton portfolio, including properties in Savannah, Georgia, the Meadowlands in New Jersey, Washington, D.C., and Monterey, California. In 1991, Dennis moved to Maryland to work at the Sheraton Inner Harbor Hotel, where he held a number of leadership positions including Director of Sales and Marketing, Director of Revenue Management, and Director of Food and Beverage. In 1998, he became the General Manager of The Hamilton, a 318-room luxury hotel in the heart of downtown Washington, D.C. In 2001, Dennis became the Area Director of Operations for MeriStar Hotels and Resorts in the Philadelphia area. In 2003, he was appointed Assistant Secretary for the Division of Tourism, Film and the Arts for the State of Maryland and Director of the Maryland Office of Tourism Development. In May 2004, Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. named Dennis to the newly created role of Chief Marketing Officer for the State of Maryland. He joined the U.S. Travel Association in October 2007 as Vice President, Industry Relations, bringing nearly thirty years of travel and tourism experience to the association.

Above all, Dennis was most proud of the life he built with his family and the memories they shared together. Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Deborah, his three children Alexandra and her husband Joshua, Victoria and her husband Kevin, and Brendan and his wife Shannon. He was also a proud grandfather to Reid, Mackenzie, Rory, Claire, and Alice.

Dennis was a big person with a larger-than-life personality, who certainly left his mark on the world around him. He will be remembered for his confidence, storytelling, and command of any room, along with his strong work ethic, love of travel, and appreciation for red wine and chocolate.

The family will receive friends from 2–4 p.m. on Friday, January 23rd, at Grace Community Church in Fulton, Maryland, followed by a memorial service open to the public at 4 p.m. Dennis will be laid to rest by immediate family at Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville, Maryland.

When I heard the news, I was dumbfounded. And very sad. I met Dennis and Deborah in the 1980's when he and I worked together as young bucks at the Sheraton Savannah Resort with another good friend, Neil Dinsfriend. The three of us worked hard together & played hard together. But Dennis was the special one, a larger than life figure, who we all valued as a great friend and inspiration to others. I was at their wedding and remember thinking "how this guy had it all". He was smart, handsome, hard working and his wife was beautiful, intelligent and compassionate. They were a great team and I hoped to be friends with them for life. As it turned out, our careers in hospitality took both of us to numerous locations and as we raised our families, as is often the case, we lost touch for a long time. Then one day, he tracked me down and we had lunch in Manhattan Beach, CA while he was on a business trip. It was a glorious day, sunny with a window table overlooking the ocean, a long overdue reunion for the ages. Sadly, that was the last time I saw Dennis. And I have missed him ever since. The photo of Dennis and I was from their wedding 42 years ago, in 1983 I believe. Their family was very lucky. Dennis was an amazing guy.

We met Dennis through the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and he quickly became a friend. He was a big part of our tight knit community as we all worked together to raise money to cure CF. It's very hard to believe he is gone. Our best to his many friends and family. Bruce & Suzanne Hoffman

Dennis passionately loved his family, took care of his friends and had a stellar career. I will always be grateful to him for sharing his time and joyful heart with us. Dennis and Deborah lit up the room when they we´re together at our Cystic Fibrosis Foundation events. I will always remember.
Love, Josie

Dennis brought great energy, creativity and kindness to everything he did for the Maryland Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. You could always count on him for an idea, a resource and he made people around him feel heard. He and Deborah attended many of our events and were champions of our mission. We are grateful to have had his spirit and commitment to our community.

Although it has been many years, Dennis was a very special friend during his tenure at the Sheraton Inner Harbor. He was an extremely hard working dedicated professional who would do anything to help associates and customers. I would be remiss to not mention his involvement as a Board Member of The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. His commitment to the cause truly played a foundational role in the success in the fight against this disease. However, it was his passion for his small children at the time that put that smile on his face. Both Debra and Dennis were a couple that my family enjoyed and most certainly looked up to. Dennis's impact on my life will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace my friend!
