Chesapeake, VAMr. Dennis L. McCurdy, 83, formerly of Virginia Beach, VA, and more recently of Springfield, VA, passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at INOVA Fairfax Medical Campus in Falls Church after a period of declining health. He was born on Wednesday August 13, 1941, in Palmyra, PA. Dennis lived in Norfolk and then Virginia Beach for 38 years, but cognitive health complications required him to move to Springfield, VA, to be closer to his son in 2010. He was the son of the late Lloyd and Ruth McCurdy and was also predeceased by his loving wife, Carolyn Frances McCurdy, who passed away Dec. 9, 2003. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Norfolk and was married in the church in 1966. He later joined the fellowship of Grace Lutheran Church in Chesapeake where he also taught Sunday School. Finally, Mr. McCurdy was a member of St. Timothy Evangelical Lutheran Church in Norfolk where he taught Sunday School as well. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Old Dominion University with a secondary emphasis in education. He later received a Master's Degree in education from the College of William & Mary. He taught at Norview High School, Lake Taylor High School, and Ruffner Academy in Norfolk for 20 years. Beginning in 1983 until his retirement in 1999, Dennis taught in the Chesapeake Public Schools as Broadcast Instructor at WFOS-FM. After his retirement, he taught history courses at Tidewater Community College in Chesapeake and continued to teach Sunday School. He loved to write about and listen to music and interviewed a vast array of musicians throughout his broadcast career, including Dave Brubeck, Richard Stoltzman, and Aaron Copland.
His legacy will be remembered through his two sons, Geoffrey McCurdy of Norfolk and Brian G. McCurdy and wife Julianna Evans of Springfield, VA; his two granddaughters, Melody McCurdy and Penelope McCurdy; his two grandsons, Quinn F. McCurdy and Wesley G. McCurdy; and his great-granddaughter Emberleigh McCurdy.
The family will receive friends on Monday Evening July 28, 2025, from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM at Oman Funeral Home and Crematory, 653 Cedar Road,
Chesapeake, VA 23322. The Celebration of his life will be on Tuesday July 29, 2025, at 1:00 PM in the chapel of the funeral home. Rev. Judy Cobb will officiate. He will be laid to rest beside his dear wife, Carolyn, in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens 524 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.omanfh.com.
