Dennis Alan Sebren

Dennis Alan Sebren was born on July 25, 1960 and went to heaven on August 17, 2024 following a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his mom, Melba Joyce Sebren and baby sister, Ashley Karen. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Kelly Sebren; son, Jake, daughter-in- love, Lexi; granddaughter, Margaux, and daughter, Jessie. He is survived by his father, Otha L. Sebren; three siblings; sister, Leisa and Phillip Bowman, son, Adam Bowman, wife, Julie and grandson, Raylan; brother, Barry and Brandi Sebren, children, Lauren, Brandon, Bailey, and Matthew Vice; brother, Matt Sebren, children, Ashley and Brody.

How can you sum up an entire life in a few paragraphs? You just can’t. You inevitably put emphasis on certain events or people and neglect others that held just as much importance. So I am going to try and be general in my descriptions written here. If you knew Dennis then you knew his heart and how important you and your memories of your time together with him meant. I will just have to trust that each of you reading this will know my heart as well and how special each of you are to me and were to him. 

Dennis. What can I say? He was a good man. He was a good father, a good husband, a good uncle, a good neighbor, a good coworker, and a good friend to so many. He had a fierce competitive spirit as a youth playing football, running track and throwing the javelin. He made many lifelong friends while in college at Northeast. Stories of the shenanigans that happened during those few years could still make him laugh until he cried. His competitive spirit followed him to adulthood as he played men’s softball for years. The referees many times made him reverse hit because he hit so many out of the park left handed when playing five and five league (men had to bat with their non-dominant hand) then he would laugh and say ok…. then hit it out of the park with his right. Even though he excelled in sports, he always craved affirmation from others that kept him humble. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. His best days were spent on the lake until hunting season and then his best days were in the woods. So many wonderful memories with his friends and children were in the woods and on the lake. He loved riding four wheelers, cooking on an open fire, and listening to Def Leppard on a big outdoor speaker. 

He loved his children with such fierceness I would pity the man that ever harmed either one of them. Jake was his first. Oh how he loved him. Riding him on the four wheeler in the backyard in our first little house on Marva Drive was one of his favorite memories. One of his absolute favorite memories that he repeated over and over again was the one of Jake getting his first deer. He was so proud of Jake and the man he has become, especially seeing him as a new dad to Margaux. He told me many times that Jake was the best dad in the world.

Then came Jessie. The second she came into the world, he was never quite the same. Not sure what magic she captured with him, but she did. I think Jake knows that same feeling when he looks at Margaux. Something about daddy’s and their daughters. And let’s not even begin to talk about that grandbaby girl. Margaux had him wrapped around her finger from the beginning. I am so thankful he got to know her and love her. His “peewee.” She lit up his world. 

When Dennis started having balance problems about five years ago, he knew something was wrong. We spent over two years trying to find out what was happening to his body as things slowly declined. God in his infinite mercy and grace orchestrated so many things over the years. Always working for our good. He is so good at taking a negative situation and turning it into a wonderful one. As this disease took over his body, Dennis became kinder, gentler, more reflective about his life, able to reconcile a lot of that with his Lord. In doing so, had such a close walk with Jesus and was not afraid of dying. He changed from being somewhat timid about sharing his faith, to being bold in it and wanting everyone to fully know God’s love for us, His forgiveness, and His desire to have a personal relationship with each of us. He prayed….oh how he prayed. For his children, friends, and this country. He told everyone he met that he was blessed and ready to meet his Savior. It’s such an overwhelming gift to know that as close as Dennis got to the Lord on this earth that now he is actually in His presence. He would want more than anything to be remembered for loving Jesus. What a lesson we can learn from Dennis’ life. We all fall short. It’s not how we begin the race but how we end it. Boy did he end it strong. I pray that the Lord speaks through Dennis’ life and others will come to know Jesus Christ as their personal savior. It ‘s the best decision Dennis ever made and honestly the only one that truly mattered.

 A “Celebration of Life Memorial Service” will be held on Friday, August 23, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 2500 Southside Dr., Shreveport, Louisiana. A visitation will be held on Friday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Officiating the service will be Earl Timmons. 

 In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dennis’ honor to St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital or Summer Grove Baptist Church Missions.
