Dennis Richard Semkin

Dennis Richard Semkin passed away on March 21, 2025 at 93 years old in Wickenburg, Arizona at his residence, Rustic Ranch. Dennis was born September 19, 1931 in Florence, Missouri to George and Eda Semkin, the second youngest of 8. Dennis grew up on his family's farm in Sedalia, MO. He graduated from Central Methodist College in Fayetteville, MO and then received an MD from University of Missouri, School of Medicine. After completing his residency in El Paso, Texas he joined the Air Force as a flight surgeon.

He served at Craig AFB, Alabama for two years, progressing to the rank of captain. In 1961, he and two other doctors from Mizzou formed The Prescott Medical Clinic in Prescott Arizona, where he practiced until his retirement in 1987. He moved to Wickenburg in 1997, and for a spell practiced at The La Paz Medical Clinic in Quartzite, AZ. Dennis is survived by 4 children: Sam Semkin, Seth Semkin, Savana Pitney, and Bobbie Gilman; all with families of their own. He is preceded in death by his daughter Sallee Semkin and son Stacy Semkin. Dennis had 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren at the time of his death.

He had a tremendous love for all his family, and he will be greatly missed. Dennis, affectionately known as Doc to his many friends, and "Papa Doc" to his grandchildren; was friendly, well-liked and had a charming smile. A man of many eclectic talents; he sang, played guitar, and even performed on the local radio station with his siblings growing up. He prospected for gold on horseback in the Superstition Mountains with his best friend. Movie stars attended his 4th of July parties. He was a great athlete. He worked hard and played hard! His children can't remember him ever taking a single sick day. He was truly a remarkable man. In addition to his medical practice, he served with the Yavapai County Sheriff's Posse. Doc was also a cattle rancher and was one of the early introducers of Texas longhorns to Australia.

He was passionate about Team Roping! His favorite rope horse was Yamaha, who carried him to the pay window many times including National Team Roper in his 60s. He finally hung up his rope at the age of 88. This eventually branded him the title "The Cowboy Doctor." He also generously provided medical care for local ranch hands and cowboys in need, free of charge. Dennis was always quick with an entertaining story from his wide breadth of experience. He drew great pleasure from intellectual discussions, and often remarked on being the 1949 high-school state debate champion of Missouri (the "Show Me" state!). Doc was well-known in the Wickenburg restaurants for his favorite meal: pie, ice cream, and bacon. Clearly the secret to longevity!

Dennis is being laid to rest in Heritage Memorial Park Cemetery in Dewey, AZ in a private service. A Celebration of Life will be held at Wickenburg Ranch Golf Resort in the Event Hall, September 27th at 2:30 pm, with BBQ Reception to follow at The Gilman Home.
