Dennis Sibbert Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 12, 2019.
Dennis Leo "Denny" Sibbert, 87, of Redwood City, California, died Saturday, April 27, 2019, of complications of C.O.P.D.

Born November 26, 1931, in Toronto, Canada, Denny was the third child of Florence Alice (Livesey) and James Sibbert. He attended Danforth Technical Institute where he trained as a printer. Denny served in the Canadian Army in the late 40s and early 50s. Denny was married to Margaret Bonser from 1952-1956; their daughter is Suzanne Brittain.

Denny met Emma Josephine "Jo" Mc Cutcheon in the late 1950s at a dance in Toronto. They later moved to California, eventually settling in Redwood City. Denny and Jo were married from November 26, 1960, until her death in 1991. Their two children are Denine Sibbert Hicks and James "Jim" Sibbert. The family moved to San Carlos just before Jim was born.

Denny established Sibbert Typesetting Service on Brewster Avenue in Redwood City, running a huge Linotype machine and hand-setting the type. In 1973, Denny earned his real estate license and became a Broker, locating Sibbert Real Estate at 1234 Cherry Street, San Carlos, and specializing in industrial/commercial real estate. He and Jo owned numerous properties on the peninsula.

Over the years Denny was involved in many local service groups including Newcomers, Rotary, Masonic Lodge, and Shriners. He and Jo sang, danced, and acted in numerous "Chicken's Ball" skits which raised money for San Carlos schools.

Denny enjoyed games of skill. An excellent dominoes player, he and a partner won "The World Championship of Dominoes" in 1989. Later in life, Denny was able to combine his favorite method of travel, cruising, with his love for bridge, by earning certification from the American Contract Bridge League to teach bridge. He was the bridge master on dozens of cruises during his retirement, eventually traveling to well over 100 countries.

Denny was married to Joan Lucas from 1992-1996. During the early 2000s he had a long-term and long-distance relationship with Zena Stewart of London, England, whom he met on a cruise.

Denny was an avid musician who sang, and played clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and other instruments. In 1957-58 he was part of a singing quartet which achieved minor success in the Toronto area, even appearing on an amateur TV show. Most recently Denny enjoyed playing and singing with the San Mateo Elks Lodge Band.

Denny is survived by his sister, Bernice Johnston of Canada; daughters Suzanne Brittain of Huntsville, Canada, and Denine Hicks of San Luis Obispo, CA; son, Jim Sibbert of San Mateo, CA; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Stan Sibbert, his sister, Rena Poole, and his granddaughter, Deirdre Hicks.

A memorial will be held for Denny on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 1:00 pm at the Peninsula Masonic Lodge, 1150 Arroyo Avenue, San Carlos, California 94070. His cremains will be interred at another time in a private family ceremony at Skylawn Memorial Park.

In honor of his beloved 3-legged cat, Nox, donations may be made to: Peninsula Humane Society 1450 Rollins Road, Burlingame, CA 94010 or at phs-spca.org.

I have such fond memories growing up. Spending many holidays with Uncle Denny, Aunt Jo, Aunt Jean, Denine, Jimmy and Bobbi-Jean was always fun and very musical. I was very pleased to have spent some time with Uncle Denny on his last visit to Canada. He came to visit his brother Stan in the nursing home before his passing and sang to him, it was lovely, and the first time I saw Uncle Denny cry. He always had a smile on his face and song in his voice. I love you, Rest peacefully Uncle Denny.
