Dennis Wayne Sumner, 64, of Fredericksburg, VA passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at Inova Hospital, Alexandria. Dennis spent 45 years of his life in government service. Upon graduating from West Point in 1982, he started his career in the US Army. He retired as a Major, then went on to work for the US Department of Energy, the Joint Warfare Analysis Center, and finally, the Defense Intelligence Agency.
In his free time, Dennis enjoyed music. He played a number of instruments including piano, organ, accordion, and mandolin. He sang in his church choir at Hope Presbyterian Church but was most proud of his work with the West Point Alumni Glee Club.
In addition to his musical interests, he was drawn to genealogy and researching his family tree. He was so proud to be part of such a loving family with its rich history. While his knowledge of the family tree grew, he also cultivated his love of gardening. He always made sure to share his vegetable harvest with friends and family.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Melody J. Sumner; son Brian Sumner; daughters Stacy Hennessey (Shaun), Terri Schenkein (Scott), and Wendy Chandler; parents Alvin W. and Patricia A. Sumner; sisters Debbie Duncan (Doug) and Dianne Schroeder (Jerry); brother Dean Sumner (Sharon); and eight grandchildren, Skylar, Nicholas, Sophie, Eric, Lilith, Kairi, Wesley, and Lucas.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Clyde and Hattie Sumner and Earl and Eileen Jones.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at Hope Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
