It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Derek Tillman Gates, who left us on January 10, 2026. Born on November 9, 1967, in Mobile, Derek was a true Southern man at heart. He had lived in several places throughout his life but made his final home in Lillian.
Derek was a proud graduate of Satsuma High School, Class of 1987. He was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, where he found joy in community and fellowship. Derek had a passion for the outdoors and loved tending to his garden and, in his younger years, fishing.
Anyone who knew Derek knew of his enthusiasm for sports. Whether it was cheering for NASCAR or supporting Alabama Football or his beloved Dodgers and Lakers, he was always ready to root for his favorite teams. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those who shared in these joys with him.
Derek is survived by his beloved brother, Marcus Brent Gates, who will forever cherish the memories they created together, as well as numerous other relatives and friends. His warmth, kindness, and laughter will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Derek is preceded in death by his loving parents, William Jenkins and Orinell T. Gates and his brother, Christopher Kevin Gates.
Services for Derek will be held on January 24, 2026. A visitation will be held at Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. with a graveside service to follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens. Family and friends are invited to join in celebrating his life.
Rest in peace, Derek. Thank you for the memories and love you shared with everyone. You will be missed more than words can say.
