Date of Death: January 10, 2025
Date of Birth: September 21, 1970
Derek Jason LaPointe of Leeds, son of Rolande (LeCompte) LaPointe and Richard LaPointe was born on September 21, 1970 in Lewiston. He died at his home on January 10th following a long illness. He was 54.
Derek graduated from Lewiston High School in 1989. He showed an aptitude for technology as early as elementary school. His interest was kindled by such computer games as Tanks by Atari which he played alongside his older brother, Kevin. His enthusiasm never waned despite the fact that Kevin would always stick Derek with the tank that couldn't turn. Long before computers caught on, Derek received his first one at age 11. From there, there was no going back. He would spend hours programming, often roping in the boyfriends of his older sister, Rhonda who forfeited more than one Friday night date to the enthusiasm of her younger brother's technology obsession
After high school, Derek worked at Videotronics selling and installing television satellites. He went on to earn an Associates Degree of Applied Science in Electromechanical Technology from Central Maine Technical College in 1994. He worked various jobs, including as a Computer Technician for CBE Technology where he would spend his days giving IT support and repairing computers for students and faculty at Colby College. By the turn of the century, Derek founded his own computer business, Computer Conscript where he offered services that spanned from repair, maintenance, and data recovery, to network design, website design, hosting, and personal computer training. His company thrived and sustained him up until the time of his death.
Although he was a coder before coding was cool, Derek was nothing if not cool. In his younger years, he could often be found clad in leather and jeans cruising on his motorcycle with friends and often with his beloved Uncle Gene - or in cargo shorts and a tank top roaming the woods on his ATV. He was tall, handsome, and charming, even when he was schooling you in darts or pool. Much of his charm was rooted in his humor. His good natured wise cracks would be repeated by others and remembered for a long time. But most of all, he was sensitive. He was the person with whom people confided their worries or fears because he was such a compassionate human being.
If Derek were writing this obituary, it would focus on the only accomplishment that mattered to him: being a father. Lana and Jason were his world. The years he spent raising them were the happiest years in his life. He was so proud of both of them.
Derek was predeceased by his mother in 2012 and by his older brother, Kevin LaPointe in 2022. He is survived by his daughter, Lana LaPointe and son, Jason LaPointe of Topsham, his father, Richard LaPointe and step-mother, Sharon LaPointe of Fort Myers, Florida, sister, Rhonda LaPointe-Lachance, brother-in-law, Mike Lachance, and niece, Charlotte Lachance of Portland.
A celebration of life will be held in mid to late April. Details will be shared with friends and family via Facebook as soon as that information is available. In lieu of flowers, please share a memory of Derek either on Facebook, the Funeral Alternatives website, or at his Celebration of Life in April.
