Santa Fe - Derk was an extraordinary and curious individual, a true companion who embarked on adventures and shared deep connections with others. He possessed a rare ability to listen attentively, making every conversation meaningful. With a diverse range of skills and a thirst for exploration, he ventured to remote forests, deserts, and mountains. Derk's love for his family, friends, and the joys of life resonated deeply. We will forever cherish his spirit.

I worked for Derk on the Santa Fe Hotshots in 1975. I recall him as a charismatic and original leader. Derk was never passive. He always was alive!

Derk led us into and out of danger that first year of the Prescott National Forest fire fighting crew. He had great intuition and strength and leadership. I am blessed to have known him.
