In Loving Memory of Dennis Randall Potter & Devin Lee Potter “Together in Life, Together in Rest”

With deep sorrow and love, we announce the passing of two inseparable souls—our beloved father and brother.

Dennis Randall Potter, 75, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on July 1, 2025. Just six days earlier, his son, Devin Lee Potter, 37, passed unexpectedly in his sleep on June 25, 2025.

While losing them both so close together has been heartbreaking, it brings comfort to know they didn’t have to be apart for long. Their bond was special. In life, they were nearly always together—fishing, traveling, working on cars, and simply enjoying each other’s company. They shared a quiet, steady love that didn’t need to be spoken to be felt.

Dennis Randall Potter

Born on May 21, 1950, in Roosevelt, Utah, to Howard Whitmore Potter and Shirley Rae Harris, Dennis was the second of four boys and spent his early years moving frequently. Among the places that left a mark on him was Alaska, which he loved enough to take the whole family back to see years later.

Dennis graduated from Sky View High School in 1968. He went on to serve in the United States Air Force from 1970 to 1972, working as an aircraft mechanic and crew chief on planes including the C-141, C-5, and C-130. He was stationed at McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, Washington and was honorably discharged.

With some jesting, (he sat on her until she said yes) Dennis asked Shirlee Lisle Maupin to marry him. They eloped to Elko, Nevada on October 27, 1973. Together, they raised four children: D.J., Heather, Devin, and Bryan.

He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Utah State University, focusing on Industrial and Aeronautical Technology. Dennis spent his entire career in the aerospace industry—first at Hill Air Force Base working as a mechanic on the F-16, F-4, F-105, T-33, and later at Morton Thiokol (later ATK), working on the Space Shuttle program. In 1988, he was assigned to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where he worked in and around the iconic Vehicle Assembly Building. He took great pride in the work he did for NASA and the Air Force, and his quiet brilliance as an engineer was known to those who worked alongside him.

Outside of work, Dennis was an adventurer at heart. He loved being outside, restoring classic cars, fishing, camping, traveling in his RV, going to Wendover with his brother Wayne and son Devin, and tending his garden—especially his fruit trees, tomatoes, and quaking aspens.

After Shirley passed in 2004, Dennis was heartbroken and never fully recovered from her loss. He retired in 2005 to finish raising two of his sons Devin and Bryan, who were just teenagers at the time. In 2013, he built a home in Beaver Dam, Utah, where he and Devin lived, fished, and supported one another each day.

Dennis passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his children, and comforted to the end by his two cats, just as he wanted.

Devin Lee Potter

Devin was born August 28, 1987, in Logan, Utah. From an early age, he had an inquisitive mind and a big, kind heart. He could fix just about anything—especially electronics and computers—and would often take things apart just to understand how they worked.

Devin had a special bond with his family, and his love extended deeply to his six nephews, Mason, Liam, Wyatt, Lin, Lincoln, and Ledger. He was a proud and caring uncle who loved spending time with them.

Devin attended Logan High School. Soon after high school he made a special close friendship, one that would last a lifetime, his best friend Jordan. The two shared countless adventures and supported one another through every chapter of life.

He loved to fish, especially with Dennis, and especially in Idaho. He was a gamer, a movie buff (especially old horror movies), an animal lover and a thrifting master. He loved going to secondhand stores with Jordan—or by himself—and finding good deals or odd gadgets to tinker with. He enjoyed working on cars—his own and his dad’s—and was always down for a late-night food run or a cooling summer swim.

Devin was a private person who kept his circle small, but if you were in that circle, you felt his loyalty and love. He showed up in his own way—quiet, constant, and dependable. He had a loving and caring heart. He was generous with his time, his laughter, and his compassion. He made people feel seen, supported, and cared for.

Dennis and Devin were more than father and son—they were best friends, companions, and soul-deep family. They lived life side by side, and now they will rest together, too.
