Devoise Lashan Holder I, affectionately known as “Dee”, was born March 31, 1977, in Selma, North Carolina where he was deeply connected to his family and community. He was a pastor, minister, father, mentor, coach, and friend. He peacefully departed this life, leaving a legacy of love and cherished memories. Devoise grew up in Selma where he graduated from Smithfield Selma High School in 1995.
Following his academic pursuits, he began his career in truck driving. He also owned a landscaping business, Holder’s Lawn Care, where he traveled all across North Carolina assisting the community in beautifying their yards. When not on the road, he fueled his passion for grilling, another one of his loves. His favorite food to grill was chicken. Though blessed with many talents, his greatest talent was on the basketball court playing basketball. His love for the game was unmatched.
Devoise was known for his braveness, tenacity, and perseverance. Although he was known as “Big Boy”, he was also known for his big heart and willingness to show generosity and support for anyone in need. There was one thing he loved more than anything in the world and that was family. He was a firm believer in fellowship, friendship, and fun.
Devoise was known for being such an outspoken person who spoke truth, wisdom, and sound counsel to people of all ages and backgrounds no matter where he was.
He was preceded in death by his beloved father, Herman Gurney Lee Holder.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Centora Holder; his children, Miracle Holder, Trinity Holder, Destiny Holder, and Devoise Lashan Holder II (DJ). He leaves to cherish his mother JoAnn (Atkinson) Holder and his two brothers; Herman Holder and Joshua Holder (Porsha), his nephews; Marquel and Jaylen and niece Kourtney.
He leaves behind a wide network of cousins, uncles, aunts, and numerous friends who were touched by his presence and legacy. Devoise Lashan Holder I will be tremendously missed by all who knew him. His hugs, laughter, smile, and contributions to the lives of so many around him will forever remain in their minds and hearts. Rest in heaven, Devoise.
